On November 12, 2015 from 8:30am-12:30pm and November 25, 2015 from 8:30am-12:30pm I shadowed Dr. Heidi C. Jahn (DVM) at the North Shore Animal Hospital. On November 12, I did my personal interview with Dr. Jahn. Dr. Jahn is one of many veterinarians at the North Shore Animal Hospital located at 4630 Douglas Avenue. Anyone can reach Dr. Jahn at her (262)-639-7000 which is her work phone number.
Dr. Jahn is a professional in veterinary medicine. She wanted to be a veterinarian ever since she was eight years old. At that age she wanted to be able to treat all animals. Once she got to high school, she focused on math, biology, and chemistry classes the most. To prepare her for college, she took many college prep classes and advanced math and science classes. She attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison for college and for vet school. Dr. Jahn chose to go to this University because ever since she was a little girl, this school was the only one that she had in mind and she wanted to go there from the start. Dr. Jahn also received many scholarships from the University that helped her get through her college years. The main challenges that faced her during college would be keeping her grades up and fighting for a spot in vet school because there are only 28 veterinary schools in the country and only a certain number of people can get into the school. Dr. Jahn was very excited when she learned that she got in the school. Dr. Jahn went to vet school for four years to get her undergraduate degree for becoming a professional veterinarian. Once she graduated from vet school, she started working at a veterinary hospital in Kenosha, WI for two years. Once she got her first job, her number one goal was to become the best veterinarian and provide the best care to animals. After that she switched and started working at an emergency clinic in Racine, WI for one and a half years. Her biggest success story from the emergency clinic was when there were poisoned German Shepard puppies that came in one day and were given alcohol as treatment for the poison. The treatment lasted three days and those days were the most stressful days that she has had. The puppies all survived and Dr. Jahn has never been prouder of herself. After the emergency clinic, she finally transferred to the North Shore Animal Hospital. The thing that surprised Dr.

Jahn the most about being a veterinarian would be that it was harder than she expected because of all the possibilities of problems that there were. Dr. Jahn is specialized in treating dogs, cats, and a variety of small animals. She chose to specialize in this group of animals because as she got older she realized that she could not treat every animal. Dogs are the easiest animal for her to treat because they are easy to handle and everyone naturally knows a lot about dogs. Iguanas and hedgehogs are the most difficult animal for her to treat because it is hard to find veins in iguanas because they have scaly skin, they do not hold still, and they are not brought in very often. Hedgehogs always curl up in a ball and it is difficult to examine them that way. Dr. Jahn says that in order to become a veterinarian you have a great personality. You have to know how to multi-task, you cannot panic when something goes wrong, you have to be patient because it takes time for animals to heal, and you have to have people skills because you have to know how to …show more content…
Jahn, Kim, and Dr. Whitney these past two days. I learned what I should do in order to become a veterinarian like what classes I should focus on. Dr. Jahn gave me a lot of advice with school work and what I should be prepared for in the future. I was very excited to shadow a Dr. Jahn because I really want to be one when I grow up. I was really excited when I was told that I would be able to examine surgeries. They gave me a mask, special glasses, and a bouffant to wear while the surgery was going on. Overall, I had an amazing time shadowing a veterinarian and now I know more about veterinarians and what I need to do to become

Becoming a vet has been my lifelong goal and the focus of my education. I’ve cared for domestic and non-domestic cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, mice, mallard ducks, hermit crabs, turtles, frogs, fish and Madagascar hissing-cockroaches. My pets inspired my passion for animals. I am amazed by their unique forms of communication, instinctive behaviors, and the trust given to humans who care for them. My pets have provided me with many learning experiences which have included: rabbits with abscessed teeth, an impaction, respiratory disease(s), a duck with a broken wing, and cats with heart disease and cancer.…

Several minutes into surgery after the use of both a saw and bone cutters, I could feel the sense of satisfaction in the room as the tail was successfully amputated from the six year old German shepherd. Observing the surgeon, pleased by how the surgery had gone suture the skin around where the highly infected tail used to be I was once again reassured that veterinary medicine is the course I wish to study. l believe that being a vet is a diverse, challenging yet rewarding career, as there is no other career in the field of medicine that requires you to be an optician, surgeon, dentist and internist all in one day. Learning about animal conservation and the risks that the animals face in biology, has encouraged me as an individual to volunteer at a RSPCA charity shop assistant to raise money for vulnerable animals. My knowledge and animal handling skills have been broadened further due to my voluntary work at Hounslow urban farm, where I spend time alongside the vet…

If one were to ask a young girl want she wants to be when she grows up, she would proudly say a princess, or maybe a rock star. I’ve never been the typical girl though and my answer was always different. Some days I wanted to be a dog trainer or a zookeeper and being a marine biologist wouldn’t be too bad. In middle school I realized what all these jobs had in common; animals. I knew whole heartedly that I wanted to work with them, to improve not only their health and welfare, but also that of the community they were in.…
