Straight Outta Compton showcases the journey of how Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella, and MC Ren made it big in the music world. This movie shows the struggles that they encountered in their lives, giving insight into how rough life is when living in Compton, California. These five young men started off with a dream to make music for their brutal neighborhood, exposing the truth about what really goes on in Compton. Their lives then take a turn for the better when they stumble across music manager Jerry Heller. With Jerry's help they soon become N.W.A., one of the biggest rap groups around at the time. Their rough and honest lyrics aggravated the authorities, but they proudly stood up to them to shine light and expose what life was really like in Compton. N.W.A.’s music was like nothing anyone had heard before bringing them immense fame and fortune. The fame and fortune did not come easy. Gary Gray first started his career with directing music videos and then worked his way up to directing movies. He has directed several other popular films such as: Law Abiding Citizen, Friday, Set it Off, Murder was the Case, Crack House, and many more. F. Gary Gray has worked with Ice Cube in the past. They first met back on the set of a music video that Ice Cube just happened to stop by on. Ice Cube and F. Gary hit it off right away and worked together on several music videos and movies. F. Gary has always been a fan of N.W.A and lived near compton so, their music really hit home to him. I think that this gave him an edge in telling the story of N.W.A. Most of the actors that were in the film were relatively new actors to the movie industry. Gary is no stranger in the directing world. He has directed other movies that have shown what life is like “in the hood”. He is an excellent director and was given the opportunity to direct Fast 8, one of the most popular movie serious of all
