The Coen Brothers: Fargo And No Country For Old Men

From the dusty streets of New Mexico, to the snowy towns of North Dakota, The Coen brothers take their viewer through the North American landscapes creating truly memorable characters. The Minnesota born brothers have created a name for themselves, with actors falling to their knees to be featured in one of their few feature films Joel and Ethan were born in Minnesota, with Joel being born in 1954 and Ethan 3 years later in 1957. The two began showing interest in the arts when they would film their friends at a young age. The interest in film design expanded from there, with Joel studying the topic at NYU, whilst Ethan studied Philosophy at the prestigious Princeton University. The two later on, created a partnership writing dark eerie screenplays. Their directing career began with their first feature Blood simple. From then on the brothers rose to directorial stardom, earning four Oscars for their films, Fargo and No Country for Old Men. The Coen’s don’t have such a tight focus on the camera work, it’s quite simplistic, but it’s the mis-en-scene elements, the actions of the men and dialogue of John Goodman’s Walter which really create a sense of realism. The repetition of the line ‘is this your homework Larry’ is dry but somewhat entertaining, as you see John Goodman’s character go from calm to angry in a matter of minutes. This is another case of seeing the character development. In the latter half of the scene, walter is out smashing a car, yelling profanity at the boy inside the house. The scene includes all three protagonists and their actions present the character they are. Walter is hot headed and agro, Donnie is scared and quiet and the dude is the peacemaker of the
