The hygienist that I got to observe was very helpful and informal. There office was very updated. They had digital x-rays, computer charting and files, the only down fall was they still had the medical history on a paper chart in the office. Every unit had an x-ray unit provided in their room. They had one PAN machine shared between everyone in the office.…
Studies have highlighted that poor state of oral health in hospitalised patients is due to low priority given to oral care provision, poor knowledge of oral procedures by healthcare professional, lack of protocols assessment tool, lack of implementation of oral care regimes and lack of staff training. There are guidelines for the provision of high quality care for oral hygiene in hospital settings, but as the research points out, there is inadequate details for family carers. The help of carer’s and family during patient hospitalisation can make a great difference to this aspect of their care and well-being and more should be done to encourage their involvement (British Dental Foundation, 2014). The aim of this innovation is to; raise awareness for the need for effective oral health promotion, plan for change to make sure oral health promotion is provided, education and training is provided and assessment tools are provided; implement/execute the plan then evaluate the plan and ensure that the change becomes permanent. Innovation Objectives • Provide education and training to improve healthcare professional’s knowledge and skills.…
The best interpretation of a dental hygienist that I can conceive is a professional whose main job is to teach their clients the essential oral hygiene skills and provide dental care in order for the client to maintain their overall oral health. Among the various responsibilities performed for the client to insure their health and safety includes making sure, we, as dental hygienists first do not harm to the patient by contaminating with pathogens that could have easily been disposed of by simply following the standard rules of infection control. As stated by Ester Wilkins “Dental healthcare personnel have a professional obligation to serve all patients with comprehensive oral care, including patients with known or unknown communicable diseases.…
Some qualities I feel I possess as a person and a hygienist is that I am determined, responsible, self-motivated, organized, and flexible. Determination is something I knew I wanted to achieve when I started college it is something everyone needs to possess to be successful in life to better their future. For example, from the moment I started in the dental hygiene program I was determined to pass my courses and to graduate. I had to be determined in my courses if I wanted to be able to take my state board and hopefully become a licensed dental hygienist. Without determination, I know I would not be where I am today in my life and my career path.…

Option 1- Quality Assurance Nursing home patients deserve the best quality service possible. How this quality is maintained is where Continuous Quality Assurance (CQA) comes into play. CQA sets the standard for an organization and seeks to maintain that level of quality. It is ongoing and uses past experiences as well as future variables to identify how the facility is doing in order to locate where a facility has the potential to or has already failed to maintain standards (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, 2016).…
Introduction to the Dental Hygiene profession has been a complete and enjoyable class that set the core all the clinical documentation and protocol to follow here at Fortis college. As part of this class the instructor had create a variety of interactive assignments where students get to experience what it feels when having a real patient in front of them. Such was the clinic observation activity where we, the lower clinic class, had the opportunity to observe how students of a higher class were handling a full clinic section with the help of their high qualified instructors. One of the expectations I had for this activity was that I would be able to see the process of care in action, since the clinician brings the patient to the operatory…
Communication is vital since dental hygienists are constantly teaching patients how to have healthier teeth. Dental hygienists work individually with their patients in a direct manner in which they clean their teeth and also teach them how to take better care of their teeth. Oral health is a key health subject that dental hygienists teach their patients. They teach them various things such as which toothbrush they should use and how a good healthy diet can improve oral health as well (“Dental Hygienists” U.S. Bureau). Dental Hygienists also record if their patients show signs of abnormalities or diseases while inspecting their gums and teeth.…
Dentistry is a very intriguing field that combines a professional health service with a business structure for compensation. All dentists are put into a position where there is a conflict of interests. This is due to the fact that they are in the position to gain financially from their professional recommendations. As a result, both the dentist and the patient are beneficiaries of the provided dental care. Within this structure, there can arise many ethical dilemmas.…
This essay will outline two similar critical incidents that took place in the clinical sessions where consultation between dentist, and physician is important in conducting a dental treatment plan. Both incidents occurred during the initial appointment…
Give two examples of poor communication techniques that you will be sure to avoid with this patient and explain why you chose to avoid these techniques. 1. Inappropriate body language: I choose to avoid displaying an inappropriate or negative body language because it portrays a different meaning to patients. It could mean that one does not have their interest at heart which may lead to lack of trust with the patient. This is because a greater part of communication actually involves body language and the healthcare field is all about trust between the patient and the providers.…
Case study 1 (duration 4.30 – 6.58) This part of the video dealt with the interaction between the doctor and Barbara during her home visit for a routine check up. The interpersonal skills used and one barrier to the communication process, during the interaction is discussed in this part. The interpersonal skills are very important part of the health care sector therefore, the health care professionals needs to develop this in their practice (Bach and Grant, 2009). In the clinical settings the interpersonal skills are very important to improve the standards of quality of care and failure to maintain that standard may put patients or health care professions at risk.…
Thousands of people are terrified of going to the dentist, but there are many other methods are available to help those who fear it. Going to the dentist is better than not going at all. There are too many diseases that have been linked or related to bad oral care and if there is a way people can be aware, then we can stop the spread of these diseases and even save lives. This is why young kids should start to understand good oral health at an early age, resulting in avoiding horrible and possibly life-threatening diseases. “More and more research just keeps pouring in that confirms all the connections between health of the mouth and the resulting health of the body.”…
There has been a history of poor communication in the medical field that has stemmed from physicians not being able to communicate well. Physicians are having issues trying to use medical terminology and also convey the meaning of the terminology to their patients. Some patients walk away from the doctor 's office feeling as though they still don 't understand what exactly is going on with them. Physicians do not realize that the medical terminology is creating a disconnect between their patients. Communication in the Health Care System is a skill that is necessary for Physicians; however, they lack the ability to listen, speak w/o using medical jargon, and write effectively.…
