How Reliable Is The Narrator In The Giver

Christoper is not a reliable narrator because whenever he does not have control over his emotions, he completely shuts down his body and mind. For instance, when Christopher is describing how he feels when he is in a new place, he mentions how he covers his eyes and ears, blocking out all outside surroundings. “Sometimes when I am in a new place and there are lots of people there it is like a computer crashing and I have to close my eyes and put my hands over my ears and groan…” (143). Clearly, whenever Christopher is in a new place or somewhere he feels uncomfortable and he covers his eyes and ears, he is missing all the things that are happening around him. Similarly, when Christopher is in the train station, there are too many noises and people for him, so he sits on …show more content…
“And I didn’t open my eyes and I didn’t look at my watch… I had been sitting on the bench for approximately 5 hours”(180). This shows how whenever Christopher detaches his mind for his body, he completely ignores everything that is happening around him and can stay like that for hours. Likewise, when Christopher is talking about detaching his mind at will, he mentions how sometimes it's a bad thing because he does not notice if anyone is trying to talk to him or trying to get his attention. “I don’t notice anything else and Father can be calling me to come eat my supper and I won’t hear him”(73). When Christopher says this, it becomes apparent that he misses a lot sometimes. Detaching his mind at will, leads Christopher to be an unreliable narrator.
Christopher is an unreliable narrator because he gets very sidetracked at points while trying to explain something. For instance when Christopher is running away from his Father, he hides behind the shed and starts to describe a metal pan, but then he starts talking about how far London is from where he is now. “There was the circular lid of a very old metal pan leaning against the wall. And it was covered in rust. And it looked like the

, I do not notice anything else and father could be calling me to come and get my supper and I will not hear him”(73). Evidently, he realises he does this, however he does not realize that there are important actions going on around him. Adding to that, there was one point in the book and Christopher gets so focused into a man he almost misses his train. “And I saw a man with a newspaper and a bag of golf clubs go up to one of the doors of the train and press the big button next to it and the doors were electronic and they slid open…

Having a simple bus with simple items made it feel like home to him even if it was not much. Christopher felt that he was living this lie with his family, felt as if he was an alien in his own home. Feeling that, made him looking for a place to call home and left his whole life that he had. Still while living with his family he felt alienated just as Kavita Sreedhar felt “ just as I was setting foot into the country at one of these immigration counters, I had my first taste of how alien I was to feel in my own homeland” (Sreedhar 63).…

However, this is just the surface of something much deeper, and if you were to read into the facts of Christopher’s life you would see that he is the hero of his story. He had a dream and he risked everything, up to and including his life, to achieve it. Life can be incredibly overwhelming at times and to be able to find the peace that Christopher found, even if that peace only lasts four months, would be nothing short of incredible.…

But instead, he did not develop as much which makes him mostly a static character. Christopher’s internal development is restricted and does not grow for the simple reason that he is unable to express his emotions when they grow too strong. When he found out that his mother had an affair with Mr. Shears, he did not get upset or sad because he knew his mother was dead. “I don’t feel sad about it. Because Mother is dead.…

This problem interferes and makes socializing very hard for Christopher as he cannot understand jokes, this is shown in chapter 13, ‘I cannot tell jokes because I do not understand them’. Then his example of a joke which his father had told him, ‘His face was drawn but the curtains were real’. He explains how he understands how it is funny, because of how drawn has multiple meanings, however, if he were to tell himself this, it would only confuse him as having something mean different things at the same time is, ‘hearing three different pieces of music’ and ‘uncomfortable and confusing’. Another thing his behavior problem interferes with is, are his interactions with others and how he cannot understand what others may be trying to do to help him. An example of this is in chapter 211, ‘a man came up to me’, ‘he said, ‘You look lost.’…

He says he was “out”, which is the truth, however he does not tell the whole truth about where exactly he had been. This reveals how Christopher rationalizes what lying is, and it sets the standard of what is a lie and what is the truth in the book. Christopher believes this type of lying is justifiable, because everyone omits the truth. He believes that everyone does not tell the whole truth and he considers this as not lying. This conflicts with what a lie is.…

An example of this is his misunderstanding of metaphors due to not knowing what the meaning is or when people use non-verbal communication (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Mark Haddon, 2002, Pg. 16, Chapter 26). He also has a hard time depicting how someone is feeling (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Mark Haddon, 2002, Pg. 4 & 5, Chapter 3). Due to some sort of behavior disability (which is never really given a name in the book but which resembles autism), Christopher’s response to conflict is debilitating both mentally and physically. Throughout the novel, Christopher deals with internal and external conflict. While conflict is part of everyone’s life, it is especially troublesome in Christopher’s. Christopher faces many conflicts throughout the story, many of them happen within himself.…
