Global Warming is a problem for many reasons. Of these many reasons three specific reasons stand out; it causes diseases, storms, and its effects are not automatically seen. A video done by PBS said, “Global warming isn’t just melting the ice it is triggering large scale climate changes of every kind” (2005). Climate change is the reason for both diseases and storms; in both cases without the climate change these diseases and storms probably would have never happened.
Diseases. Disease is one reason that global warming is a problem. Dramatic change in climate caused by excess carbon dioxide in the air can change the climate of a place, causing the perfect conditions for outbreaks of different viruses and diseases. The video by PBS (2005) talked about one specific example: Greely Colorado in 2003. Droughts and climate changes there caused an outbreak of West Nile Virus. One doctor that they interviewed for the video explained that they had a very wet spring and a really hot beginning of summer, which set up perfect conditions to cause their West Nile Virus outbreak. On their website the Natural Resources Defense Council talk about climate change and disease, they said, “increases in heat, precipitation, and humidity can allow tropical and subtropical insects to move from regions where infectious diseases thrive into new …show more content…
Storms are another problem of global warming. Similar to diseases, storms are caused by dramatic climate change. This climate change is different from the type that causes diseases because climate change that causes storms happens in the sea. These warming sea temperatures intensify violent storms. PBS’s video on global warming explains this better. The video describes the El Niño Southern Oscillation as a system that “sets a pattern for much of the world’s climate”; when El Niño’s happen, trade winds weaken allowing the warm water to be pushed back to South America. This reverse movement causes changes in weather patterns. In some places it increases the rain, such as, Colan in 1983. In the video one of the people from Colan explains that the ocean level went up fifty-five centimeters for two months, which means in two to three months it rained the amount it normally would have rained in twenty-five years. It caused lots of flooding and destroyed the beach. El Niño’s are happening more frequently now and this is due to dramatic climate change caused by excess CO2 in the
