How Does Egg Osmosis Affect The Cell Membrane

Improved Essays
The chosen experiment for this group was egg osmosis. Osmosis is when water travels through a cell membrane. The group must put 12 eggs into vinegar overnight. The vinegar contains acetic acid which will start a chemical reaction that dissolves the outer eggshell. The group will have to cautiously rub the remaining outer shell off until it gets to the clear layer. After that, they must place the eggs into four different liquid drinks - water, coke, red bull and coffee. In osmosis water is transported from a solution of low concentration to a much higher concentration. It’s crucial for a cell’s survival to regulate osmosis in order to manage and maintain an excellent internal environment, according to Student Study Guide, Fourth Edition by Martha …show more content…
The cell membrane doesn’t allow everything to go through it. Biology Dictionary explains that the basic function of the cell membrane is to protect the cell from its surroundings. The cell membrane controls the movement of substances that go in and out of cells and organelles. Another name for the cell membrane is called selectively permeable membrane because of the main reason being it’s selective nature. The cell membrane will only allow the selected and necessary molecules such as water to pass through it states Socratic Biology. Both osmosis and cells play important roles in any biological life. In animals and humans, osmosis helps transport nutrients and release metabolic waste products whilst in plants osmosis aids the absorption of water from the soil and helps transport it all right up to the leaves of the plant. Sugar is a bigger molecule compared to water therefore it is most likely it won’t pass through the cell membrane alone. There are special proteins that’s embedded in the cell membrane that are specifically required to transport sugar throughout the cell …show more content…
The drinks that contain artificial colouring or basically are a different colour will have an enormous effect on the colour of the eggs within a day or two. This is because of diffusion and osmosis. The colouring in the drink will diffuse throughout the water. If the substance is able to move through the membrane, it will because it is trying to obtain the same density on either side of the membrane, resulting in the colouring of the egg. Center For Nanoscale Science, MRSEC, states that the substances will move from an area of higher concentration (or density) to an area of lower concentration through the membrane. Once the concentration is equal on both sides of the membrane, it is said that the substance has achieved

Maple Syrup n’ Water Reactions Lab In the egg osmosis lab, we set out to see the reactions that the egg had when placed in maple syrup or placed in distilled/pure water. Osmosis is when a solution attempts to bring itself to equilibrium by moving from a high concentration area to an area of low concentration, and in this lab; the egg attempted to bring itself to an area of low concentration. Secondly, hypotonic is an area of a solution that has low concentration, in contraire; hypertonic is an area of high concentration, in this lab the distilled water was hypotonic and the maple syrup was hypertonic. The distilled water was hypotonic because it allowed the liquid from the egg to move to it and the maple syrup was hypertonic because the egg…

In this experiment I attempted to created and study the affects of a egg in a hypertonic and hypotonic solution. To conduct this experiment I used the following materials: cups, eggs, vinegar, corn syrup, spoons and food coloring. To begin the experiment I placed three eggs in vinegar to dissolve their shells, leaving behind a thin membrane that allowed water to pass in and out of the eggs. The water molecules enter inside the eggs and the eggs begins to swell. Once the eggs have sat in the vinegar for two days I removed one from the vinegar, washed the eggs and placed it in the corn syrup.…

The amount poured was just enough to cover the surface of each egg. Maple syrup was poured into one cup containing an egg. Tap water was poured into the second cup, containing the second egg. Saltwater, made by combining an unspecified amount of table salt and tap water, was poured into the third cup, which contained the third egg. 33 Minutes after being submerged in maple syrup, observations regarding egg B(the egg submerged in maple syrup), were recorded.…

My hypothesis was correct because the results show the mass decreasing when put in maple syrup and the mass increasing when put in the vinegar and distilled water as you can see in the results. When I put the egg into the vinegar it increased in size as well did its mass it when form 63.5 grams to 79.5 grams. When I put the egg into the maple syrup it looked deflated, the mass of the egg went from 79.5 grams to 47.2 grams. When I put the egg into the distilled water it has been blown up, its mass went from 47.2 grams to 92.6 grams. The variables where the egg, maple syrup, vinegar and distilled water the vinegar and distilled water both made the mass of the egg increase.…

After soaking the egg in vinegar for a day to remove the shell and not the membrane, I placed the egg in Karo corn syrup because it has a high concentration of dissolved sugar. Although the sugar molecules were too large to pass through the semipermeable membrane of the egg, water molecules were able to exit the egg. After twenty-four hours, the egg had decreased from a mass of 84.1 grams to 47.0 grams due to osmosis. The corn syrup is hypertonic in comparison to the egg and thus the water moved from a high concentration of water in the egg to a lower concentration of water in the syrup in order to reach equilibrium. Subsequently, the corn syrup was diluted in water in order to have an equal concentration of water in the syrup and in the egg itself.…

This process showed how each solution affected the egg’s rate and direction. Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a differentially permeable membrane. Moving across a semi-permeable membrane, the water diffuses from a range of high concentration to a range of low concentration. This is made possible by the presence of a concentration gradient. For this experiment, the eggs were examined due to the shifting of the solution across the membrane.…

Once the egg was decalcified, it felt very fragile and bouncy. When the egg didn’t have a shell anymore, it was kept from seeping out by the “plasma membrane” (egg white), which was congealed by the soaking in vinegar. When the nucleus of the egg became visible, it looked very cloudy. The substance that entered/left the egg in each situation was water, due to the state of the egg, by way of osmosis, in a way of trying to balance the inside and outside the “cell” (egg), this balance is essential to functioning at the preferred isotonic state. This lab could be improved by using 2 different eggs, as the data seemed inaccurate when placing a hypotonic egg into a solution of corn syrup made the egg hypertonic, because there wasn’t a proper start weight in the egg when placed in the second solution.…

This lab provided a good perspective of the movement of molecules diffusing and going through osmosis into a cell. The ability of the cell membrane to be selective was illustrated by it not allowing all the molecules through (starch). This shows how in a real cell it can differ between essential and nonessential or invading molecules. Lastly, It gave a good example of hypertonic solutions and how the concentration gradient…

Osmosis is the net movement of water towards higher concentration. In osmosis experiment, water likes to diffuse from an area of low-solute concentration to an area of high-solute concentration. The purpose of the osmosis experiment was to observe the diffusion of solutes and the osmosis of water through a semipermeable membrane, which was dialysis tubing. This experiment was done to examine, if the solution is hypertonic, hypotonic or isotonic.…

Method: In this experiment each group received 2 chicken eggs whose shells have been dissolved off. This gave us a differentially permeable membrane so that we can observe osmosis and what happens when the membrane is presented with different solutions. Since we did not know the concentration of the egg, we had to assume that it equaled the concentration of the membrane. We then had the ability to determine the concentration based off the assumption and the rate of osmosis.…

This experiment showed the important of osmosis by showing how the tube that represents the cells in side us react when placed in different situations. This is very important to know in the medical field, when deciding how to keep our cells healthy and alive. Like when a person is being treated for dehydration, the doctors know what percentage of saline to put in us that it will not swell and eventually burst our cells. By watching osmosis make a cell hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic, we have a deeper understanding on why this subject is so important for our overall health and much…

The purpose of this EEI is to create and analyse an experiment that relates to and supports the theory of osmosis in biological cells. Cells are the biological building block for all life; all living organisms have cells also. Cells provide structure, absorb nutrients from food and convert those nutrients into energy so that the cell can carry out specialized functions. There are two main categories with most organisms and their cells; prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The distinctive difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes is that eukaryotic cells contain membrane-bound organelles, such as the nucleus, while as prokaryotic cells do not.…

When we came back the second day we saw the egg looked like it enlarged, the shell looked like it was cracking, and felt bouncy. The egg weighed more than before, it weighed 80.23 grams. Our data supported the hypothesis because the shell wasn’t as hard as the day before. These days’ data was a hypotonic solution because there was no met movement of water, therefore the egg enlarged. On day two we recorded the data, then we poured the vinegar out of the cup and added distilled water in, to leave overnight.…
