The gummy bear acted as the semipermeable membrane in which a movement of water molecules from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration was observed. The first solution consisted of 60 mL of water with 0% salt water concentration, the second solution consisted of 60 mL of water with 30% salt water concentration, and the third solution consisted of 60 mL of water with 50% salt water concentration. The gummy bear placed in the 0% salt water concentration swelled up and exhibited a mass growth from 2.6 grams to 8.2 grams. The gummy bear in the 30% salt water concentration shrunk and showed a change from 2.6 grams to 2.1 grams. The gummy bear soaked in the 50% salt water concentration decreased in mass from 2.6 grams to 2.0 grams. These results show that the gummy bear was hypertonic compared to the pure water solution but was hypotonic to the 30% and 50% salt water concentrated solutions. Thus, in order to create an equilibrium in these solutions, water flowed into the gummy bear in the first solution and flowed out of the gummy bear in the other two solutions. In brief, the higher the solute concentration in comparison to the gummy bear, the more the water would flow out to create a isotonic solution due to the process of …show more content…
After soaking the egg in vinegar for a day to remove the shell and not the membrane, I placed the egg in Karo corn syrup because it has a high concentration of dissolved sugar. Although the sugar molecules were too large to pass through the semipermeable membrane of the egg, water molecules were able to exit the egg. After twenty-four hours, the egg had decreased from a mass of 84.1 grams to 47.0 grams due to osmosis. The corn syrup is hypertonic in comparison to the egg and thus the water moved from a high concentration of water in the egg to a lower concentration of water in the syrup in order to reach equilibrium. Subsequently, the corn syrup was diluted in water in order to have an equal concentration of water in the syrup and in the egg itself. Other students used a pure water solution which is a hypotonic solution that made the egg grow in size due to water moving into the egg instead. To summarize, the plasmolyzed egg in a solution filled with a high concentration of sugar showed how water molecules would move down the concentration gradient and across the semipermeable membrane in order to reach an isotonic
