Chuck Close

“Art saved my life.” This quote is from Chuck Close, a famous artist who paints photorealism, a type of art genre where an artist attempts to reproduce images as realistically as possible, and is of whom this essay is about. Now, I’m not writing about Close because he is dead, oh no, he is very much alive at the age of 76 years. No, the real reason I’m writing about him is that he is an amazing artist and overcome many this and that it was he who was picked by my teacher for the class to write about. With all this background done let’s move onto the real essay. Let’s start easy. Close was born on July 5 in the year 1940 in Monroe, WA, to his parents, Leslie and Mildred Close. He had one sibling, Martin. Close, as due to his dyslexia

Some examples would be his election into the National Academy of Design as an Associate Academician in 1990, only to become a full Academician in 1992, receiving the National Medal of Arts from President Clinton in 2000, and being appointed to the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities by President Barack Obama in 2010. Despite these achievements he still had many obstacles to overcome along the way. One such example would be his face blindness. Face blindness is a brain disorder in which the individual cannot recognize faces. He was able to overcome his face blindness by drawing or painting their face. Speaking of his art, he has done so many different styles that I can’t possible fit them into this essay but here are some. The grid method is when an artist draws a grid over a reference photo and then drawing a grid of equal ratio on their work surface. The work surface can be anything from paper to a wall, but basicly, the artist will draw, paint or use any other technique to transfer the image to their work surface one square at a

Significant personal events in one’s life can act to influence an individual’s artmaking practice. This is evident through Frida Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ 1944, Jenny Sages ‘After Jack’ 2012 and Christian Thompson ‘King Billy’ 2010. Frida Kahlo, is the first example of such an individual as she experienced a horrible accident causing permanent damage to her spine. As a result of the accident, Kahlo became influenced to paint through using her emotion as a driving force to paint where Kahlo states “I am broken, but I am happy as long as I can paint”. This is depicted in Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ in plate 4 which depicts a figure namely Kahlo herself being pricked by nails with the presence of a broken pillar.…

As an example, John Lennon’s shooter allegedly was inspired to commit crimes from the novel, The Catcher in The Rye. Again, there must be limitations specifically when talking about how much of an influence art should hold over us. Art does not require a spiritual component. Because art is very individualistic, it is meant for everyone to have an input on their own thoughts of art. Though God could be considered for one’s expression of art, it is not necessarily required.…

All famous painters have one thing in common; an element makes the painting come alive. Whether it is a pose, a color, lighting, or brush stroke, without it the painting is dull and uninteresting. The author likens compassion as that element in healing. “To be compassionate is to be moved in our guts, to mysteriously experience another's pain.” (p. 197) Murren says the church may be a poor place for addicts and hurting people to seek help.…

This is also true in how it affects anybody’s behavior. Art can open people up to new ideas and beliefs, and artists can make an enormous impact as role models, either in a negative or a positive formality. Art reach out with us on so many levels, and appeals to emotions, senses, reason, and fantasy because it inevitably affects us more than other areas of our judgement. There are some of us who would pay to see a scientific research, but most of us are regular cinema goers, visit art galleries or photo exhibitions. They can co-exist because of the fact that it is easy to be affected by something we see, hear, or read that seems to us to be something to which…
