How Are Math Used In Healthcare

Math is all around, weather you notice it or not. Doctors use math on the daily to prescribe medicine that patients might need, check vitals, and see how hurt a patient may be. Math is very important and is needed in order for doctors to do their job. First off, doctors use math everyday to prescribe medicine to patients. In “ Medicine and math” Natasha Glydon states “Doctors need to figure out how many milligrams of medicine each patient will need, depending on their weight.” Doctors must use many conversions in order to make sure they prescribed the right amount of medicine to each patient based on their health.Along with calculating how much of the prescription each patient should take, doctors must calculate how long the prescribed medicine will stay within the patients system. Glydon states “Doctors must also calculate how long the medicine will remain in the patient's body and the effects …show more content…
From “How to use math in Healthcare careers,” Christopher Raines says that Doctors check vitals such as temperature, blood pressure etc. to see what is wrong. Doctors use vitals in order to run tests and calculate what could possibly be wrong with a patient's body. For example if a patient has a fever along with high blood pressure, the doctor can analyze that data and compared to what it should be in order to start finding a diagnosis. Lastly, doctors use math to calculate just how broken a patient might be. In “ How CAT scans work,” the author demonstrates how the doctor uses different forms of math such as geometry and trigonometry to find dimensions in x-rays. doctors use trigonometry especially to find just at what angle the X-ray needs to be captured in order to see what damage has been done.
