Hospice Meeting Reflection

Today was my official first day meeting all the patients on my case list. I met with my supervisor about two weeks ago now; right before I left for vacation. We met for orientation which was much shorter than I expected. I made sure I got all my paperwork together and she told me all about AMed* hospice, the entire team a patient has and my adaptive role as a volunteer. Besides learning everyone’s role, the most important pieces of information I was given pertained to the status of my patients. Because it’s Hospice care, all persons enrolled must be diagnosed as having less than 6 months to live. My supervisor informed me that we have some who have lived over a year and some die the same day they get enrolled. I learned the signs of death over weeks, days and got increasingly nervous as she spoke. Although I knew what hospice was before I choose this site, I feel like I would be shocked …show more content…
I woke up bright and early this morning and headed out to meet my supervisor at the office. I put on a new shirt and some of my favorite jeans to look put together but also comfortable and confident. We visited a Memory Care facility which happened to be midway between the office and my home. Since we currently have four patients in this facility it made me happy that the place I would probably be spending most of my time was so close to home. We didn’t stay too long but I met each patient and chatted with the ones whom were verbal. One who was particularly verbal was Mrs. Fancy Nancy. Of course, I have changed her name for confidentiality reasons but for the rest of these journals I’ll refer to her as such to maintain fluidity. I named her Fancy Nancy because her entire outfit matched including her accessories and she notified me and my supervisor

After we were done with her morning medication, I went to one of her patient whom I was assign to by Mrs. Natasha to perform mini mental survey and general assessment on the patients.…

In your discussion post, you spoke of being an oncology nurse. Working in a large hospital as both a social worker and radiographer, I have had the opportunity to work side-by-side with nursing staff. The care and compassion that is demonstrated by your profession is inspiring. I have seen nursing staff insert themselves into the middle of a situation; thereby, ensuring a patient receives the best care possible which at times can cause a heavy burden and emotional toll. Callanan and Kelly (2012) discuss how working with patients who have terminal illnesses can be “all-consuming and creeps into every corner of your life” (p. 12).…

I had the opportunity of being able to attend and observe The Serenity Seekers, an open Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) twelve step meeting. Upon arrival, I received a warm welcome by many different group members. They introduced themselves to me and one of the members even brought me pamphlets that provided me with information regarding what their A.A. program entailed. At first, I was apprehensive about going to an A.A. meeting; however, the members were all accepting of my presence, which made me feel comfortable. By accepting me, the members were displaying cohesiveness, the primary therapeutic factor allowing A.A. members to feel a sense of belonging, acceptance, and validation amongst the group.…

On September 11, Kayla, Taylor and I attended the Parklane Group AA meeting. This meeting was covering chapter eight in the book Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions by Bill W. Before reading chapter eight, the leader of the AA meeting read aloud the rules and upcoming events, he then had us introduce ourselves. I was surprised to see that every time someone wanted to speak they first stated their name and referred to themselves as an alcohol addict. I thought this was only done in movies. However, I believe this step could help in the road to recovery.…

The third AA meeting I attended was at Bridgewater Congregational Church, in Bridgewater Connecticut, at 7:00pm on Friday June 8, 2018. The past two meetings I attended were open book, however this meeting was a twelve- step meeting. The language used in this meeting was the same as the two other meetings I observed. Many members mentioned the words “higher power”, “prayer”, and “powerlessness”. The man who ran the meeting introduced himself, read the preamble and asked if there were any new members present.…

As kids, we were thought to always tell the truth, a situation that seemed to be black and white. As we grow older, the reality of things becomes more complex. We are challenged in situations where telling the truth is not as easy and we have to consider how the recipient will interpret the information. We learn to outweigh the positive and negative outcomes if we tell the truth. Recipients, such as the patients, have many rights.…
