Current Health Status of Hispanics
As per the statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Hispanic mortality rate is 24% lower than whites, but are 50% more likely to die from diabetes or liver disease. Cardiovascular disease and cancer are major causes-accounting two out of five- Hispanics deaths, which is almost same as whites. Hispanics have lower mortality rates from the ten most leading causes of death, but higher mortality rate from diabetes, chronic liver disease. (CDC, Vital Statistics, May 2015) Compared to the national majority, Hispanics have 35% less heart diseases; 49% less cancer; 23% more obesity; 24% more poorly managed high blood pressure; 28% less screening for colorectal cancer. (National Health Interview Survey, 2009-2013). Hispanics have remarkably good health status aggregate as close as the whites. Reasons cited for this are; Hispanics are younger than whites by 15 years, have lower smoking population, and have closer family and social relationships. The common health disparities among Hispanics compared to the whites, are reported to be in cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, elevated blood pressure and other chronic health conditions. Hispanic adults are more likely to be 65% more diabetic and 15% more obese. They are likely to have, 45% more cervical cancer, 15% more liver disease, 2 times more asthma, 6 times more tuberculosis. The causes of the health disparities are directly linked to the health barriers, such as income, education, and language proficiency, lack of health insurance, cultural beliefs and acculturation. Health Promotion among Hispanics
The high number of uninsured, low-income, lower educated Hispanics population, is a great challenge to meet the health promotion among them. An effective health promotion, should accommodate their habits and beliefs among various Hispanic groups. The major health risks among them are cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and obesity. The risks associated may be lowered through health promotion.
Primary health promotion for the Hispanics includes, health education, exercise, and nutritious diet and quit smoking. The materials for this health promotion should target appropriate reading level with Spanish translation. Health provider may seek the help of Spanish interpreters and engage the community health workers (Promotores de salud) to educate and link the Hispanic community to free or low-cost service. Obesity is a major health issue for Hispanics because it is pre-clinical diabetes. Regular exercise and proper diet will help to prevent diabetes and reduce cardiovascular
