Halloween Skeletons

With Halloween approaching, there has been an overwhelming presence of Halloween skeletons. Unlike many other fantasy Halloween creatures, the skeleton is real and often poorly depicted as a Halloween decoration. The bones in a real skeleton function as support, protection, movement, storage, and blood cell formation. This skeleton in particular is anatomically incorrect and would therefore function poorly.
The rib cage of this skeleton alone has many inaccuracies. A real human skeleton has 24 ribs, while this skeleton only has 8. The lack of ribs in the rib cage would not allow the it to function effectively in a real human. The rib cage is essential in a human body in order to “protect the internal thoracic organs... [and] during chest expansion, [to allow] the rib cage [to move] to permit inflation” (“The Ribs”). The rib cage consists of costal cartilage which connects the false ribs to the sternum, false ribs which are connected by costal cartilage to the sternum, and floating ribs which is not connected to the sternum. This skeleton’s lack of false ribs, floating ribs, and costal cartilage would therefore hinder the rib cage’s proper functions.

The bones in the hands and feet are divided in three sections, in the hands: carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges, in the feet: tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges. These short bones in the hands function to “provide stability and movement” (Types of Bones). This skeleton’s hands and feet are not divided correctly, the hands are missing the metacarpals and the feet are made up of one bone, while it should be divided into tarsals, and phalanges. Without these short bones, this skeleton would not have proper movement nor

Malnutrition is the insufficient, excessive, or imbalanced consumption of nutrients—it means literally “bad nutrition”. This was the concern of anthropologist Katherine A. Dettwyler in her book Dancing Skeletons. An ethnography set in Mali, a West African country, the book is Dettwyler’s account as she attempts to measure and document the effects of malnutrition on Malian children. Her ultimate goal is to develop “culturally appropriate nutrition education programs” (Dettwyler 1994, 7). This is not, however, an easy task as Dettwyler makes her way throughout Mali.…

Being a 16-year –old, and having taken my first semester of college classes this semester with my high school classes on top of that, all here at CSN, has been an unforgettable experience. On the other hand, from the three college classes I have enrolled in, including German 111, Communications 101, and Anthropology 101, I have, in my opinion, learned the most with my Anthropology 101 class. This class has been a great and interesting experience that has allowed me to view the world in a different way than most people. To illustrate, even though I thought most of the things we discussed in class like linguistics and archaeology were interesting, I consider learning about ethnology the most memorable and fascinating concept for me. To illustrate,…

For the holiday of Halloween I feel it is taken less seriously than Day of the Dead due to it having no religious meaning or connections. However, Halloween does still have a lot of reasons for celebrating. The reason and background of Halloween has to do with the fact that it connects with the day of All Hallows Eve, which is said to be when spirits of the dead come out and roam the streets, and this is the reason that children dress up, to disguise themselves from the evil spirits. For the holiday of Day of the Dead, it gets very complicated. This holidays dates all the way back to Aztec customs where several rituals were held to acknowledge their dead ancestors and honor their lives.…

Besides movement the skeleton also provides protection to vital organs such as our brain, our heart, lungs and abdominal organs. Although our skeleton provides us with such protection it is still prone to injury, wear and tear, infections, tumors and other conditions that can damage bone and become life threatening.
