Osteomyelitis In The Human Skeletal System

Improved Essays
The adult human skeletal system consists of 206 bones, in which are held together by a network of ligaments, tendons and cartilage that connect them together. Besides movement the skeleton also provides protection to vital organs such as our brain, our heart, lungs and abdominal organs. Although our skeleton provides us with such protection it is still prone to injury, wear and tear, infections, tumors and other conditions that can damage bone and become life threatening. OSTEOMYELITIS Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone or bone marrow; inflammation due to infection. Osteomyelitis is caused by a bacterial infection. However, in some rare cases a fungal infection may be the cause. There are several different ways to develop Osteomyelitis. You develop Osteomyelitis via the blood stream, this is the most common cause in children. Bacteria finds its way into the blood stream from another part of the body and eventually travels into the bone. The bone is normally resistant to bacterial colonization, events like trauma, surgery, the presence of foreign bodies, even the placement of prostheses can disrupt bony integrity and lead to the onset of infection of the bone. In children osteomyelitis is usually acute and effect the long bones, arms and legs. Acute …show more content…

Bone forms outside the skeleton, regulating movement. The process of Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva usually becomes noticeable in the early stages of childhood. The process usually starts with the upper neck and works its way down the body, and into the limbs. Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva is caused by a mutation in the ACVR1 gene. This gene provides directions for constructing a part of a protein group called bone morphogenetic protein.…

This could be as simple as removing throw rugs from the home, installing bars in the shower and near the toilet, and handrails on staircases. Other preventative measures, include: avoiding intramuscular injections, practicing good oral hygiene, avoiding tight clothing, shoes and any physical activities that require rigorous movements. 5. For my essay I choose to write about rare genetic diseases from the nervous and skeletal systems. Though different systems, the nervous and skeletal system communicate well between each other. The skeletal system consist of all the bones in the body. The vertebrae and skull, both major parts of the skeletal system, house the 2 main structures of the nervous system: the spinal cord and brain. A classification system of several different types of Osteogenesis Imperfecta is used to diagnose just how severely a person with Osteogenesis Imperfecta is affected. The severity of Osteogenesis Imperfecta varies from case to case, even among cases of the same type of OI and also even within the same family. The majority, possibly 85%-90%, of cases, types I-IV, are caused by a dominate mutation in a gene coding for type 1 collagen. Types VII and VIII, are recessive and the gene mutation has been identified, while types…

To understand the Musculo-Skeletal system and how it is suited to the functions that it performs for the body you first need to understand how the system works and what it is responsible for. It is comprised of two separate systems working together as one to provide the body with physical support, the ability to move and protection for its major organs. These two systems are the Skeletal System and the Muscular System and they contain the following:-  Bones of the skeleton  Muscles  Cartilage  Tendons  Ligaments  Joints  Connective tissue binding to the body’s organs If you break the system down into its separate parts you can gain a deeper understanding of how they create a joint working system within the body.…
