A volunteer is a person who performs a service willingly and without pay. Some benefits of volunteering is it can help you reduce stress, make friends, learn new skills, reach out to the community, and advance in your career. The volunteer program I picked is Habitat for Humanity, they partner with people in the community, and all over the world, to help build and improve a place to call home. Their vision: A world where everyone has a decent place to live. I chose Habitat for Humanity because I believe their values and the principles behind the organization. Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976, by Millard and Linda Fuller. They developed a concept of “partnership housing”, which centered on those in need. They work side by side with volunteers to build decent and affordable homes for those in need. The houses are built with no profit, and the house payments are combined with no-interest loans. Benefits to working with Habitat for Humanity include getting a new job or building a better story. Volunteering …show more content…
Having cherishable memories to tell your kids or even grandkids is a great reason to start volunteering. From the article on the Habitat for Humanity website, “With Habitat, enjoy the joyful retellings of the time you helped a family repair a roof on their home, the time you built alongside a future homeowner working to achieve financial stability and more self-reliance, the time you made a difference.” Working to help others in need and help make a difference is what it’s all about. Now volunteering for any organization is a great thing, dedicating your time towards others, the community, animals and many others, is a great thing to do. Volunteering for Habitat for Humanity can get you different skills and some cool stories. Just imagine coming home, to your family, and telling them the amazing day you had building a home for

Community service is not as bad as some people make it out to be. I myself had an internal groan when I heard that community service was required and would be set as a grade. I had only known volunteerism as doing a dull boring task with no discernible reward. But after experiencing it for myself I found it quite the contrary. Volunteering is a way to meet new people and witness a group working toward a greater cause.…

It was also helpful when applying to internships because you can use examples from your volunteer experience during your interview. For example, I was able to say in my interview that I can think on the spot because during my time at Riverfront the staff occasionally wouldn’t show up for programs so I would have to think of an art and craft as soon as I arrived. Next, the volunteer experience has made me a more well-rounded person and has helped me understand what population I enjoy working with. Everyone has a niche and through volunteering, you can learn what population you most connect with. Third, I have become more comfortable and open working with people with disabilities.…

Volunteering is an essential part of this world. Every day, millions of people around the world struggle with many problems such as: poverty, hunger, homelessness, etc. Without people volunteering to help solve these issues, what would the world be like? Although there are many existing organizations that help with these issues, such as Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels, one that I have found an interest in is Habitat for Humanity. They are a non-profit volunteer association that works together to build reasonably priced homes for people all over the world.…

I lean in favor of the Housing First initiative because it has proven to permanently house people in need, while addressing other issues with services. This approach examines the whole person instead of just one of their needs. Taking a holistic approach to the issue of homelessness is the only way that a program can make any impact on the lives of its’ participants. I also support the Housing First program because many of the negatives uncovered in the research are rather petty compared to the amount of good the program is doing. I also tend to overlook some of the negative issues because the program is relatively new and has not had ample opportunity to work out many of the kinks that come along with the approach.…

Habitat for Humanity and Affordable Housing in America Habitat for Humanity is an international organization that provides affordable housing for the underprivileged around the world, and offers aid to the areas that have been affected by disaster. Habitat for Humanity offers the opportunity of affordable homeownership, to those who otherwise would most likely never own a home. Safe and livable housing is becoming less and less affordable in America as decent houses are often built in newer areas (Why Habitat for Humanity is needed, 2014), leaving those who cannot afford to live in said neighborhoods to live in poorer neighborhoods that often extremely unsafe because of the exceedingly high crime rate. The stress placed on low income families…

Applying for public housing has always been a long and complicated process. So, before someone even begins the applications process it best for them to see if they fall under all the eligibly requirements. For example, the first step under the qualifications for The San Antonio Public Housing Authority is that they must be a family as defined under the SAHA’s Admissions and Continued Occupancy policy. They also must meet the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requirements on citizenship or immigration status. In SAHA’s policy it states that “the applicant, or at least one member of the applicant’s family, must be a citizen or have eligible immigration status” (SAHA’s ACOP).…
