Did you know there are about 2,472 people including 847 children that are homeless? Not many people realize how many are in need in Sioux Falls. This can be that they are homeless, in a shelter, or in a secondary house. There are a few things in the town of Sioux Falls to help those in need, but there are still many who sleep on the streets. You may see people here and there, but have you taken a walk downtown by the Riverwalk? There are quite a few people who haven’t. There are many young women and men who sleep under that bridge daily.
Many may have served at the Banquet in Sioux Falls. The Banquet is a place for those who don’t get breakfast, lunch, and dinner can go to eat. Some will bring their families and some will come by themselves. The Banquet, people can see what it really feels like to finally be able to eat and to not have to worry about their children not being able to eat. The Banquet has given out 5962 backpacks full of school supplies this school year. There is also the Salvation Army, Feeding South Dakota/Food Pantry, and Free and Reduced Lunches for children in school. Yes, there are things out there to help those who need it. But things can be changed to improve the programs. Every program can always be improved, but what it could be might be challenging. The Pay It Forward site in particular, helps lots of people. This site will show how many people in Sioux Falls actually help others who need help. Weather it is money to go somewhere or need help moving something. I myself have got many things from that group. I believe that there should be a rehabilitation centers to help those who don’t have jobs and need help with a resume, interview questions, interview clothes, etc. There are always jobs in Sioux Falls or people looking for help. By having this center it would let them

It would just be a general phone for those who live by themselves or need a phone to call family. This will help many of those families who can’t afford phone cards or have children. It would be very difficult to not have a phone when you have children.
In addition we could have places specifically for those who are homeless and need free things. I know the necessities are hard to come by. Especially free showers, somewhere to do free laundry, things to get personal items that would keep a person clean. There may be many families who don’t want to report being homeless do to them having the chance of their kids being taken away. Coat drives as well as food drives help but it’s the everyday things that many people take for granted. Being homeless may take away a person’s feeling of worth but being treated with dignity go a long way.
Just volunteering in general will help everyone. You get the satisfaction of helping others. I love volunteering for things with children. Volunteering at certain places show you different things. As well as volunteering lets you have many different types of

In the articles “Three Cheers for the Nanny State,” “Ban the Ban!,” and “Soda’s a Problem but…”, all three authors present their arguments with facts, opinions, and counterclaims. However, one article presents itself better than the rest. I believe that the article “Soda’s a Problem, but...” was the most convincing article. Sarah Conly- the author who wrote “Three Cheers for the Nanny State”- argues that the soda restriction is a good idea because people would be stopped from making foolish decisions that they’ll pretty definitely regret.…

Studies done by the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless show that from 2013-14 there were roughly 138,575 people living homeless in the city of Chicago alone. This is an increase of 19.4% in just one year. Chicago Public Schools identified 22,144 homeless students in 2013-14 which is an 18.6% increase from the prior school year. With steadily increasing rates it would seem only logical that the city would work to increase the amount of shelters provided for these people in need. Unfortunately, the number of homeless people in need of shelter far exceeds the number of shelters provided.…

Hungry for Change Why is it that law mandates public school meals have a minimum calorie intake, but not a maximum? This owes itself to the fact that when nutrition standards were established for public schools, it was to solve the problem of undernourishment. The majority of school aged children used to walk to school, played more outside, and were more active in sports. This resulted in children burning more calories than school meals provided.…

Growing up in a southern Alabama town of less than 10,000 residents, I was not truly aware of the issue of homelessness. Homelessness was only a subject which I had seen in the news and in movies. However, when I became a peer helper as a junior in high school, my perception soon changed. I became part of a peer mentoring program, in which I counseled underprivileged and troubled middle school students. Through this program I discovered that homelessness was not a problem rooted in major cities, for it lied even in a town as small my own.…
