Growing Up As A Landscaper

Hard Work Teaches.

“Let's go!” We’re starting the job. There is the constant smell of cut

grass. It's one of those smells that you never get used to. It is always

haunting and can smell either good or bad. If it's fresh, cut grass will

smell satisfying, but if it's old and stagnant, then the smell can be so

overpowering and abusive to the point where it makes you want to

throw up. However, your average person doesn't always have to deal

with this struggle. I've grown up as a landscaper. Having been a

landscaper has taught me many things. I learned that responsibility is

definitely extremely important. I learned that if you have a

responsibility then you have to actually follow through with it—no

The Dust Bowl was, and still is, one of the oddest things that ever occurred in nature. The Dust Bowl struck terror into the heart of anyone who witnessed the dust storms rolling across the plains like a furious black cloud. The Dust Bowl was a period of time when the topsoil became so loose that winds would sweep up the dust, carrying it across the plains in a dark cloud.…

A Taste of Domesticity in Stokes State Forest Throughout my four years of high school, I had never had a friend come back from a post-prom weekend in Wildwood and describe to me what sounded like a “good time.” The stories they told always had the same synopsis that centered around drunken fun and even drunker stupidity. Hordes of juniors and seniors slept in small dirty motel rooms. They spent way too much money on alcohol, and they often got swindled into paying hundreds of dollars to stay in an otherwise dirt cheap motel because no decent place would allow teenagers to party like they did. They sat in their hotel rooms and drank the beautiful New Jersey beach days away, waiting for the sun to set so they could continue their drunken…

Does land have a memory of its own? The film Children of Nature suggests that memory is strongly connected to the land on which the memory was created. Therefore, a walk on the beach combined with the sounds of waves crashing on the shore, and the feeling of wind blowing through your hair may illicit similar or random experiences that occurred years before. In this sense, experiences bleed into the land, whereby creating a pool of memories connected to a seemingly arbitrary symbol of its creation. Beginning at the tender age of four, my family and I united over the joy of what many would consider unlikely--yard selling. Every Saturday we would pile into the car at 7:00AM and travel the city, looking for the classic cluttered set-up on the side of the street. My parents handed my brother and I five dollars each, saying that we could get double back if we invested properly. The strange mystery did not reveal itself until we began negotiating at our local flea market to sell the random knick-knacks that had attracted our young eyes.…

Almost every single day of the week when I get home I automatically go straight to the kitchen and sit at my little wooden table that is on the right side of the kitchen when you walk in.
