The Tales of Greek Gods and Goddesses “Slay the monster Medusa and bring me her head,” said the king to a poor, yet valiant young Perseus (D’aulaire 114). It was his plot to get rid of the boy, so he could marry his mother. No man had set out to kill Medusa and come back alive, until Perseus. The tales of the Greek gods and goddesses are intertwined in history. They have been recited by many different cultures and told many different ways. That is why all of the end results match, yet the way they get there varies. Zeus could begin ruling in peace. The Cyclopes had built a magnificent palace atop of Mount Olympus for the gods that was hidden by the clouds. Whenever a god wished to go to earth, the goddesses of the seasons moved them away. The messenger, Iris, was dressed in iridescent drops and ran along the rainbow keeping busy with her errands. Zeus had shared his power with his brothers and sisters, six of his children, and the goddess of love, which created twelve great gods in the hall. From left to right, the gods and goddesses sat as follows: Zeus’s sister Demeter, goddesses of harvest and her daughter, Persephone, Hermes the herald of the gods, Hephaestus god of fire, Aphrodite goddess of love, Ares god of war, Hera, Zeus’s wife and queen, then Zeus, Poseidon god of the seas, Athena goddess of wisdom, Apollo god of light and music, Artemis goddess of the hunt, and finally Dionysus. Since Chaos and Gaia, there have been many gods, goddesses, heroes, monsters, and other creatures that have left legacies. They started the beginning of a spectacular, yet horrendous dynasty. From Zeus beating his father Cronus and saving the Olympian gods to Athena beating Poseidon and becoming the protector of Athens, there have been countless stories. The temples that were built in Athens and Olympia have lasted for centuries and only continue to provide history. Many people love to tell these myths as forms of entertainment and excitement. There are some though who believe them wholeheartedly. These people are the ones who understand the stories the best. Since, so many of them explain human instances, it is easy to look up to them as heroes. Many gods even saw humans as people and wanted to help them or fell in love with them themselves. Greek myths have been and always will be a huge part of our worlds history, whether you believe them or
