Gospel Of Consumption

The world we lives in views money as either a treasure or just something to blow their nose in. It all just depends on the person. I used to think that money was just a way for people to get what they want. However, after reading the article “The Gospel of Consumption And the better future we left behind” By Jeffery Kaplan, I think that money can be more than just giving and receiving.

One point made in the article is that the Kellogg cereal company cut work hours from eight hours to six hours in 1930. The article quotes “To be sure, Kellogg did not intend to stop making a profit. But the company leaders argued that men and women would work more efficiently on shorter shifts, and with more people employed, the overall purchasing

However, is that really enough? That may be enough for some people who just need money for spending, but what about for people that need the money to get by? I mean, there are some minimum wage workers that really need the money to pay the rent or buy diapers or needs for their babies. They work hours and hours a week and the check goes to rent, baby needs, and various other bills. That would barely leave enough for the person to use as spending money, or even to buy groceries. I’m aware that the minimum wage is fair, but other people may not be. However, that’s just how the country is. I’m a bit concerned on if it will be raised or maybe even lowered when the new president is elected. If it were to be lowered, where would that put the people mentioned earlier? They would have to take on more hours or maybe even get a second job. Another point is that when you go to McDonalds, Burger King, or another place of the fast food category, it’s almost all the same people working. At least, that’s what I’ve experienced. Same shift, same people. Usually doesn’t change. Those people that always work the same shifts might get paid more than others that don’t always work the same shift. That is just how it seems though, it may or may not be true at …show more content…
We need it. It’s a huge need. We need it for living supplies such as shelter, food, and water. Even those can be really expensive. If you don’t pay for those necessities, you don’t receive them. No water bill? City turns off your water. No electric bill? No electricity. As stated earlier, we as a society need to come together and help eachother out every now and then. Even if you feel like you already have enough money and don’t need to help anyone but yourself. It really doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor. You can still help others and they will most likely help you in return. I feel as if we as a society are so harshly separated by how much money we have. I don’t feel that we should. Everyone is born equal, everyone should live equally. However, I know that will probably never happen, especially with the presidential candidates that have a chance of becoming president. I personally think that if Trump becomes president, society as we know it is doomed. That isn’t the point, though. The point is that money can define us all. It all depends on how much we have. We could either be rich snobs that feel like they should get everything because they have a bit more money, or we could be just normal people that work to live and get by. Maybe, we should all be normal and equal, instead of being so harshly

Minimum wage has been a highly controversial topic in the United States for eighty years now. Federal minimum wage is set at $7.25 currently and there are many debates on raising it from that to $12 or $15. Many Americans think this is a good idea and its going to yield a higher yearly income, this is true. On the contrary is is also going to inflate the prices of the goods we purchase. Raising the minimum wage to $15 would not be morally justifiable according to utilitarianism and comparing inflation to what MacKinnon calls living wage.…

The minimum wage was last raised in 2009, when it increased from $6.55 per hour to $7.25 per hour. Although we may be due for an increase based on the elapsed time, the decision to increase minimum wage relies on more than time alone to make the right choice. While America is in a better place now than we were back in 2008 and 2009, we are still feeling our way through the recovery phase of the Great Recession. Additionally, we are now sitting on the $19 trillion and counting of debt that the current administration has so generously bestowed upon us.…

Everyone needs money to help them with their daily life activities like eating, shopping and even paying bills. For that, you will need a good paying job, right? CATO Institute, a public policy research organization, states “Some policymakers are proposing to raise the minimum wage, but that policy would be harmful. Research shows businesses would respond to the increased costs by reducing employment, particularly for low-skilled workers” (CATO). Basically saying this minimum wage will not help anyone, and it will do nothing but damage.…

Raising the Minimum Wage in America Millions of American employees are working countless hours every week to earn inadequate wages that result in many families to live in poverty or depending on paycheck to paycheck. Bernie Sanders has the right approach when he quotes, “the current federal minimum wage is a starvation wage.” It is time for a change so the American population needs better wages, the American population should increase the minimum wage to benefit every American business and the economy, and with an increase in pay, the American population will be able to improve the ability to buy goods and services. Millions of working class American citizens are earning low wages, which causes a strong feeling of anxiety to support a growing family, but it time to for a…

Intro: Hello everyone, my name is Bellanna and I believe that California should introduce a statewide minimum wage rate of 15 dollars an hour by 2018. To give you background on my topic, I would like to begin by defining some terms for you. First of all, minimum wage is lowest wage permitted by law for a worker to earn, and living wage is one that is high enough to maintain a normal standard of living. Statewide means I want this amount to be the standard throughout all of California. The current California minimum wage, as of July 2014 is 9 dollars.…
