Global Climate Change Research Paper

In order to understand the effects that Global Climate Change has had on weather we need to first understand the difference between weather and climate. Weather is what is happening in the atmosphere, on a given day and location. Examples of such include temperature, wind, and precipitation. On the other hand, climate is more of a broad, generalized condition that covers a region during a longer period of time. Examples of such include warm, cold, wet and dry. In the past decade, with only a two-degree rise in temperature, there has been an increase in extreme weather. More climate changes correlates with the likeliness of more extreme weather incidents, as a change in climate means a change in weather. These incidents include having tropical rain in drier areas, more droughts, heat waves, longer spring temperatures during the wintertime, and long periods of heavy snow in the winter. The driving force that is behind these effects is us. We burn far too much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere ultimately resulting in the warming of oceans, melting of glaciers, and the rising of sea levels. We keep taking actions that not only do not prevent concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere but we are increasing the amount that is emitted as well. The effects that Global Climate Change has had and will have on human activities are tremendous. Agriculture, for an example, is a major part of the United States, as it has a huge effect on our economy. Agriculture not only provides us with much of our food, the crops, livestock, and seafood is coming straight from United States territory. As you can imagine, climate change has a huge and detrimental effect on food production because of this. Agriculture is highly dependent on specific climate conditions. It is believed and proven that slight increases in temperature and carbon dioxide can be beneficial for some crops, but in order for this to be beneficial certain conditions must be met. One condition that must be met is water availability. With climate change comes more extreme weather that can lead to an all-out-assault for our food production. Changes in the frequency and severity of droughts and floods could pose challenges for agriculture. Climate change will make it more difficult to grow crops, raise animals, and catch fish. Ultimately resulting in a harsh effect on food production. This could then result in an economic downfall, as we heavily rely on food production on our economy because of the revenue it brings in. Weather has a tremendous effect on health to begin with, and with climate change, again comes more extreme weather. The increase of average temperatures will result in longer heat waves and hot summer days. The number of heat-related illnesses and deaths will increase as well. These steps can reduce the chances that the worst-case scenarios will happen. The worst-case scenario that is also referred to as the “doomsday scenario” is the result if the greenhouse gases escape from below the permafrost. The permafrost is frozen soil that spans large areas of the Northern hemisphere. Underneath the permafrost holds a huge amount of greenhouse gases. The permafrost has shown signs that it is thawing, which would result in a huge release of these harmful gases. In order to prevent this from happening we need to limit the amount of warming that will occur. We have the choice to do this, and we are the driving force behind it. Limiting the amount of warming that will occur is only possible if we change our behavior. This involves changing our behavior, as we need to become driven, educated, and not in denial about the current realties that we are facing. Yes, we can change our light bulbs, buy hybrids, place solar panels on our houses and dig the geothermal wells. These are all important steps that we can take but the real change we need to make is changing the laws. In order to do this we need to speak up, change our democracy. We have a democracy and we need to have an appreciation that we have the opportunity to change our future. Doing this requires becoming active citizens. In order to do so we need to connect with people, inform ourselves, and most importantly realize the sense of
