With the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (1971), Alaska Native people were faced with a daunting choice: give up their historic land and participate in an economically forward society, or remain in possession of their lands and govern their people. Later, Native tribes of Alaska created Constitutions to develop their communities and generate a body of government tailored to their location. With 200 tribe constitutions, it would be nearly impossible to compare and contrast them all; therefore, we will examine the Constitution of Kanatak and the Constitution of Fort Yukon.
