Gentrification: The Loss Of Scandal

Decent Essays
To some, this change is a good thing. A nicer community, with less crime and better stores certainly is appealing. However, to others, the people being forced to move due to the rising price of living, which will continue to rise the more gentrified LIC becomes, these changes are anything but good. While the loss of Scandals is acceptable, or more than in some people's opinion, the loss of something like 5 Pointz really detracts from LIC. Gentrification might raise the value of a neighborhood property wise, but sometimes, it takes away from the overall charm and defining characteristics of something that was great. Gentrification might be making LIC nicer overall, but its definitely lost something crucial to identity, as gentrification creates

“Gentrification is a trend in urban neighborhoods, which results in increased property values and the displacing of lower-income families and small businesses.” I don’t think gentrification should spread through communities. Both author’s Jeremiah Moss and Ray Oldenburg show good examples why gentrification will hurt communities and not help them. I don’t gentrification is the right thing to do right now for communities because it wouldn’t help all people in the situation. In “ New Yorkers Need to Take Back Their City” by Jeremiah Moss he explains why gentrification wouldn’t help the communities.…

Critics argue that while it brings investment and improved amenities, it also displaces long-time residents, exacerbates inequality, and erases the cultural identity of neighborhoods. Formerly known ghetto-ethnic enclave hybrids such as the Lower East Side, Washington Heights, and Hell’s Kitchen have transformed in less than the last fifteen years. With overpopulation and high-rent in the more popular neighborhoods such as the Upper West Side and Williamsburg, these areas which had not been seen as attractive due to their isolation, aged and factory exteriors, and higher crime rates, begun to be inhabited by hipsters and poor college graduates as well as people with jobs such as actors and models due to the proximity to the more popular areas. Areas like these then become so popular and expensive that they could no longer shelter the populations that once defined them. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the diminishing number of barrios in New York City using the examples of the transformation in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan and the beginnings of gentrification in Bushwick, Brooklyn as the backdrop.…

Equally, I believe that gentrification needs to be better regulated by the government. The way the government controls it currently takes away all the power from the residents. The inhabitants are the ones who put them in office and then the government does them a disservice. In the documentary (2012), even when the community members went to town halls, protested, offered alternatives and pleaded the administration went ahead with the development anyway. At the meeting one government official even said that the displaced business was "not of substantial economic benefit to the city" but what is really the definition of economic benefit.…

By introducing a theme of urban decay, totalitarianism rule, physical and psychological control, and the control of history and facts is created. Gentrification brings not only an increase in tax revenue that benefits the Mission District, but also San Francisco and California overall, which results in increased economic activity, more jobs, a boost in land values, and more public investment in buildings and infrastructure. Since 1995, over 100,000 people have been added to San Francisco’s population, and the Mission specifically has seen an increase of 13% to their total population (“Mission Community Organizing”). This is beneficial because the rapid population growth fuels jobs and opportunities while bringing in more tax revenue to the city. Millions of dollars come through San Francisco through the tax revenue that the gentrification process brings (Poblet). Business Columnist,…

New developments and businesses, large corporations, and private institutions are what gentrifying neighborhoods attract. For these reasons, housing demand goes up in the area. This denotes that affordable housing would be hard to achieve since property value rises. Richard Florida explains in his article, “This Is What Happens After A Neighborhood Gets Gentrified,” how local residents “may feel pressured to move to more affordable locations,” (Florida 9). Usually, these businesses will bring in some conveniences such as beautified environment, more security, and money to the community, but they will also drive away the neighborhood’s local inhabitants.…

In my opinion, the cons of gentrification outweigh the pros. If old inhabitants are forced out of their neighborhoods due to higher prices and taxes, where will they go, to public housing? Another point is every lower class neighborhood is gentrified, eventually every neighborhood will be higher priced, making it worse for everybody who are not making a lot of money. The real issue is finding a way to keep all the positive effects of gentrification without the isolate of one…
