There is a genetic variation found in a gene called claudin-14 which has been found to the linkage of about 65 percent of patients to have a risk of getting kidney stones. Throughout the new research, scientist have seen the ways this gene’s activity gets altered and develops kidney stones. “Claudin-14 gene is not active in the kidney but the expression is dampened by two snippets of RNA, a sister molecule of DNA that essentially is silence the gene” (ScienceDaily). One of the researchers mentions the way claudin-14 works as a filtering system by allowing minerals in the blood to pass through the kidneys and absorbed again back into the bloodstream which they are sent to cells and help function out everyday lives. When bad dieting such as consuming high amounts of salt and calcium without large quantities of water, the small RNA molecules allow an increase in the gene claudin-14 activity which prevents calcium from re-entering the blood through passages called tight junctions found in cells that aid the lining of the kidney and the separation of blood from urine (SienceDaily). A formation of large amounts of calcium goes to the urine leading to formation of stones being developed in the kidneys or bladder if calcium does not have a way back into the bloodstream. This later results to an intense and excruciating amount of pain in the bladder, ureter or urethra when large stones get stuck and block the flow of
