Unit 3 Assignment Assessing behavior is a bedrock principle of behavior analysis (Bailey & Burch, 2013). In particular, functional behavior assessment (FBA) is an analysis of the relationship between variables, such as the target behavior and environmental events, in which one varies in the presence or absence of the other. Best practice requires a comprehensive assessment that applies experimental controls and identifies limiting conditions, such as cultural issues that potentially interfere with treatment outcomes. Ultimately, behavior assessment that is conducted as part of a comprehensive case requires collaboration with members of an interdisciplinary team.

In this case, an interdisciplinary team has recently diagnosed Chester and recommends early intervention services in school and at home. Best practice in this case requires a wraparound approach that “incorporates person-centered planning in its emphasis on developing support plans that are needs driven rather than service-driven” (Carr et al., 2002, p. 6). Wraparound promotes self-determination based on the principle of normalization and includes support from experts, such as physicians, clinicians, behavior analysts, special educators, speech pathologists, and occupational therapists as well as individuals in the family-system, including parents, siblings, and care-givers. The rationale for interdisciplinary teamwork is supported extensively in literature on Positive Behavior Support (Carr et al., 2002) as well as behavioral medicine (O’Brian & Carhart, 2011). Hence, best practice for assessment in this case includes diagnostic information from clinicians as well as functional behavior analysis based on direct and indirect methods based on input from behaviorists as well as significant …show more content…
The role of collaboration between team members is paramount for successful health care, but collaboration between teams and consumers is equally significant. Bruner et al. (2011) report dominant themes in effective collaboration that include family involvement. Including family members as interdisciplinary team members is supported by research on family-systems (Dorsser et al., 2010) that promotes collaboration among disciplines as well as between professionals and consumers as fundamental to the system of care of service
