The study tested 169 participants consisting of 116 females and 52 males who were all given three different rape scenarios, and then the agreement and/or disagreement with rape myths was measured. Although the differences were not of extremes, there were findings that showed affiliated Greek students were more accepting of rape myths than non affiliated Greek students. Peirce’s case study evaluated how different rape myths are perceived in different social groups, while Greeks were the most accepting of rape myths, and emphasis is also put on the vulnerability that occurs in the Greek Community. First of all, Greek life housing is the ideal breeding ground for rape culture to occur. From uneven male to female ratios, no active security for women, no women’s bathroom; all of these factors contribute to the ideal environment for a rape to occur. However, things don’t seem to be looking up right now. Studies have shown that if things do not begin to change, we are looking at an estimated 100,000 women on college campuses will be assaulted in the next year; three in five of those women will have a sorority affiliation. It’s finally time to stop saying that it doesn’t happen on your campus because it does; whether you know it or not, whether it’s reported or not - sexual assault is occurring on your campus. Even if your school reports a one percent sexual assault risk, multiply that by 88, that is the real number of sexual assault cases. The Greek communities around the United States are powerful and pervasive; it’s time we use that power to advocate for a change.
