Back in October, the ladies of the Alpha Chi Omega chapter of Arizona State University attended a Diamondbacks game and while the girls were having a good time and taking some selfies, announcers Steve Berthiaume and Bob Brenly began to criticize and make fun of the girls with little quips such as, “Every girl is locked into her phone. Welcome to parenting in 2015” and “Oh, hold on. Gotta take a selfie with the hotdog”. The women handled it well and even posted the selfie with the hotdog. After the video went viral, Fox Sports and the Diamondbacks apologized and offered the chapter free tickets to the next game. The women responded by turning the tickets down and asking that they should instead be given to families of “A New Leaf”, a nonprofit organization that aids domestic violence victims and even spreading awareness that October was Domestic Violence Awareness Month. (MTV 2015) The problem with all this is if you search for this story online, many sources don’t include the chapter’s response to the tickets and just report on the negative part of the story. This is what help’s So is all of Greek Life like these fraternities and sororities? Do they deserve to be judged for the crimes that these groups committed? This is what I aim to discover from my research project because I feel that there is a lot of unjust hatred and negative publicity that is focused around fraternities and sororities. While there is evidence to support the stereotypes that all brothers are alcoholics, rapists, or jocks and that sisters are dumb blondes, party girls, or sluts, it’s exactly what I called it.
