Forensic psychology applies principles of psychology to legal questions and issues. Even though, psychologists were involved in providing expert testimonies since the early 1900’s but it was in 1962 that U.S District Court of Appeals clearly recognized the role of psychologists as experts in court and by 2001 council of representatives of the APA voted to recognize forensic psychology as a speciality in psychology.
The main role of forensic psychologist is to evaluate and conduct assessment to analyse the extent to which individuals meet different legal standards/criteria e.g: competency to stand trials or insanity.
