“Faster, fatter, bigger, cheaper” Farming today has changed more in the last 20 years, than it ever has. In the 1930’s McDonald’s was first started fast food/ “drive in” and is today known as the largest purchaser of beef, pork, chicken, tomatoes, lettuce and apples. The reason fast food blew up is because of inexpensive food, cheap help, and replaceable employees. It’s no secret that fast food can feed a family of 4 for under $20, as where $20 will not get you far at the grocery store. By training employees to do one of the same tasks always companies to decrease payroll and allows these employees to be easily replaceable. If we have laws in place for animal cruelty, then why don’t the same rules apply for farming. Seeing the chickens not moving or being able to carry their own weight because they get to big too fast or the cows being throw around with fork lifts and being so closed in they are on top of each other is what made me sick to my stomach. America has a huge problem with the food system, as well as just about every other system they try to regulate. Americans can’t afford quality food and if they can they are at risk for food born illness, or they choose to buy prescriptions for diabetes instead. Last week I was at HyVee. I bought strawberries, blueberries raspberries and green tea, that alone was $20. How is that affordable? Who could live off just berries or healthy food at those prices? It’s impossible. With higher producing and neglecting the system you’d think that would make it more affordable for lower class families, but I guess that’s expecting too much out of the government and we fill continue to dig our debt with food stamps so Americans struggling to make ends meet don’t
