Fahrenheit 451 Personal Narrative

“The battle preparations have been completed” said a cleric. I nodded, looking across the various types of troops gathered. The plan was to use a decent amount of cavalry to fend off the opponents cavalry, then come in close with superior infantry and destroy his flanks. The Scottish were said to be around the battlefield, but they will likely not intervene. The sun was against my army, and the dust. Two disadvantages that weren’t welcome. An envoy was sent across containing a message. “ la baguette est roi” It wrote, in a neat eloquent style. I pondered the meaning, and got the general gist of it. I smiled to myself and told the envoy to send a message back that wrote “
Und doch bin ich ein Kaiser”. Finally the envoy came back with yet another

The French army itself is hard to deal with, yet the Scottish King decided to intervene with his cavalry also. “Send the reserve heavy infantry to preoccupy the cavalry” I ordered, the men in glistening plate armour reacted immediately to my command. The battle was a mess. My lines of armoured swordsman are spread too thin, the centre will almost certainly break. The clash of steel and screams of men occupied my ears. I glanced as another volley of arrows went over head, some impacting on even my own troops. Archer fire generally had to be lucky to pierce the armour of a men-at-arms, so the effect wasn’t significant. I watched as the centre line crumbled as men started to run, some tripping over their dead comrades. The heavy sound of hooves to my left drew my attention. Some one hundred Scottish horses were charging to towards my left flank. “Ready yourself men, for we are charging into that.” I spoke, grimacing. These were the best of the best, but I could see fear in even them. “Charge!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, and our horses went from a canter to a neck breaking gallop in seconds. The Scottish cavalry hit the heavy infantry with such force that some went flying, despite their heavy armour. My retinue and I crashed into the Scottish with bone crushing force. My lance had found true, and knocked a Scot from his horse. My retinue was not so lucky, …show more content…
Jolts were shot up my spine as the horse increased speed. The French infantry turned their helmeted heads towards my retinue and I as they heard the heavy hooves. I could feel their apprehension as I charged, they had no formation, and a lot of them would die. As I reached the first struggling knight my lance crushed his chest plate, and he crumbled to the ground. Likewise the other men of my retinue killed the infantry in the same way. I looked around at the remaining enemy as they surrounded us. My heart sank. Despite the advantage of cavalry, it lies in momentum and mobility, not long periods of hand to hand combat. Knowing such me and the men dismounted, knowing that surrounded we would die either way. Better to die on your feet. Each armoured man in the retinue charged off on his own, in a frenzy. Suddenly my armour felt so cumbersome, my breath heavy, and my mind numb. I charged the lightly armoured spearman closest to me. A look of fear crossed his face, and he tried to make a jab with his spear. It glanced of my chestplate, and I rose my sword above my head. Before I could bring down my deadly arc, I felt a heavy thud against the back of my head. My vision blurred, and I crumpled to the ground. Pain filled my head, as I felt my helm being removed. “Ransom… Don’t kill him” I could hear voices coming in and out of focus. I could hear screams of victory, and I turned my

In this moment, Remarque successfully portrays the danger of war and how a person will do whatever he can to survive when faced with imminent danger. The following quote shows how they survived from another attack. At the sound of the first droning of the shells we rush back, in one part of our being, a thousand years. By the animal instinct that is awakened in us we are led and protected.…

But it did not take them long to learn of the misfortunes that they would soon face. Many recruits died very quickly without the needed training, but the ones that survived were no longer the same men that entered the war. They too, in some ways, died. They were, “insensible, dead men, who through some trick…are still able to run and kill” (Remarque 116). All they knew anymore was to survive; it did…

I vaguely recall noting the grey of his uniform and fairly sighed with relief that we were not on the same side. Piteous cries reached my ears as more and more fell around me. The sides were locked in an epic battle. We raged valiantly on, a fine machine of war, for what could have been a year or a minute.…
