There i lay with rifle in hand in a blurred daze as shouting and rifle fire begins to fill my view. I snap back into reality i shuffle to my feet and aim my rifle. a take a shot into the smoke and begin reloading in a frenzy. More fierce then the last i fear for my life in the chaos. "Get yr hed down!" i hear someone speaking. again louder "Get yr head down now!" It finally registers and i hit the dirt as cannon fire whips past my regiment and explodes into the dirt about 60 yards behind us. A round of fire hits a few around me as i stay pasted to the grass. They fall as i hear shouting. Again back to reality i stay to the grass and fire from a laying position. At this point i hear my commander shouting curses and victory chants. The confederate army begins to withdrawal and fall back to a position where the fighting slows to a halt and both parties move from the field. Back at camp we tend to the wounded and mourn the dead. The commander was wounded in battle. A graze on the side and a shot on the arm yet he still stands clearly trying not to show his pain. That night i fall asleep with nightmares of battle. I wake to find myself in a march to the next bloody

1.) In the story “Editha,” I think the real hero of this tale is George, Editha’s fiancé. He had his own opinions about the war; yet, he ended up going because he knew that was what Editha and the town’s people wanted from him. He did not back out of the position he was given by the town’s people in their military company, nor did he let Editha down when he knew this was what she wished. He buried his doubts and ideas about the war before heading off to combat with an idea of the odds against him.…

All firing had stopped it was dead silent, there were no shots, no shouting, there was no movement it was just us victorious soldiers standing in ground full of blood and gore, the only colour visible to my eyes was red, there was a pungent smell of dead corpses which was in the moist air of the battle field, vultures landed on the bodies of the dead and feasting on them celebrating our win, now when look around see hope and light the clouds cleared the sky it was no more dark and grey I could feel the victory from within. I was now satisfied, all my troop mates laughed and howled in happiness, we were victorious, I did not lay my country down. Now I live another day to fight for my country. We shot the flare into the open sky, signalling our army that we have won. I took the Indian flag and impaled it into the soft ground of the battle field marking the territory.…
