The difference between whether or not a person is to be considered a failure or a success lies in their death. Throughout Into The Wild ,Chris McCandless was a young boy who graduated as a straight A student at Emory University Instead of pursuing his career he headed into the wild of the West and Alaskan frontier to inter country of his own soul.He was more of a misguided boy struggling with his place in the world, made himself ultimately a failure rather than success because of the mistakes of him leaving unprepared for his journey , going into the wilderness with little to no knowledge of it, and isolating himself from any help he could get.He was not able to survive in the wild , all his mistakes led to his death therefore he failed.

It started when he left to Arizona without a proper surviving gear , without a map or a compass, no shelter, and a very limited food.He left on his journey without a map or a compass, one of the most important guiding tools.He could’ve easily found multiple ways to cross the Teklanika River when it flooded ,But instead he ended up heading back to the bus because he had no way of knowing which route was clear. In the book, Krakauer balmes him as well, "crossing the Teklanika to safety would have been a trivial matter. Because he had no topographic map, he had no way of conceiving that salvation was so close at hand." (Krakauer.191.9).There were multiple ways to get across as well as to get to the cabinets that had food supplies for him to survive at that time.Going into the wilderness without food wasn’t a wise decision as well, the cause of Chris’s death is believed to be starvation.At the end of the book,Krakauer points out that Chris regretted not being prepared with food. On july 30th, Chris wrote in his journal "EXTREMELY WEAK, FAULT OF POT. SEED.”(Krakauer.191.19).McCandless had no food , he started to dig and eat wild potato roots and other seeds such as wild sweet pea.
