The first challenge was what charity we would represent. My partner and I both made a list and then compared. We both listed the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital as our cause which led us to the Children’s Miracle Network as our charity. Team “Miracle Makers” was now ready for action.
The Survivor teams spent the school week at the high school where we were deprived of many of the things we often took for granted such as comfortable beds and access to our favorite foods. Combined with the fact each challenge was kept a secret and I quickly learned that it would take all I had to be a survivor.
The challenges included such things as getting up at 4 AM, to do a 2 mile run or working to solve a Sudoku puzzle after four hours of sleep. There were also group challenges where all teams worked together. One event involved each team having a candle with the goal to run around the school without it blowing out. Each team tried on their own without success. We then decided that if every team went around together with a lit candle, we could relight those that were going out and keep everyone moving forward. Even though we were competing as individual teams, are greatest success came when we worked together for a common

Introduction The 17th Annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer was a huge success this year and has been for the past 17 years. I had the opportunity be one of over 400 volunteers for the event, which allowed me to gain skills for my potential future in the field of sport management, and possibly, other related fields. The volunteer sport organization, or the organization that provided the opportunity for the community was the Bloomington Hospital Foundation, which is an organization that creates events and fundraisers in order to support the IU Health Bloomington Hospital. Their mission is “ to support the mission of Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital to be one of the best hospitals in the state of Indiana” (bloomingtonhospitalfoundation.org).…

Growing up, I got the privilege of learning from my biggest heroes, my mom. One of the biggest and most important thing I learned from her is, I can accomplish my dreams or any desire by working really hard for it. While I was evolving into a young adult, I hardly got to see my mother due to her having multiple jobs. She would get up at 4am to go to work at a retail store, then in the afternoon she will run her personal hair salon, and aside from that she was also a leader at our local church.…

Unfortunately, outsiders of the community have negative connotations about the school and its surrounding environment. The outsiders perceive Fairfield Central High to be a school embodying incompetent children who are only capable of outstanding athletic abilities instead of being efficient students like their neighboring Richard Winn Academy peers. They perceive Fairfield Central High students to be drug dealers, gang members, and teenage parents due to the low graduation and test score percentages in the past years. Jumping into the unknown has never deterred me. I enjoy, more than anything, the challenge of finding creative ways to solve problems. Last year I participated in the University of Delaware’s first Healthcare Hackathon: a 24-hour event where teams of students worked to develop solutions to Delaware’s healthcare and public health issues. My team and I were tasked with rising obesity levels. We worked overnight to create a plan which addressed the social and physical determinants of health by improving both access and affordability of fresh fruits and vegetables in Delaware’s food deserts.…

This event, Relay for Life, creates an unparalleled environment for community involvement at Grand Valley and, for one night brings people together to make a difference in the world by helping find a cure for cancer. One challenging time requiring resiliency was my attendance and subsequent graduation of the U.S. Army Ranger course. Throughout 20 hour days, 1 meal per day and little recovery time; I often had the opportunity to deliberate on whether this was important enough for all the suffering one had to endure. While in a particular phase of training in the swamps and rivers in Florida, I injured my right knee and was offered the opportunity to be given a medical recycle or simply quit if I wished. Besides the fact my duty unit had a never quit unless your dead mentality, I had endured harsher environments and injuries while conducting regular training.…
