According to Meakim et al. (2013), debriefing, also referred to as guided reflection, is as a planned activity conducted by a qualified facilitator that occurs after a simulated-based learning experience. During debriefing sessions, participants are encouraged to engage in reflective thinking, explore emotions, ask questions, and provide constructive feedback to one another (Meakim et al., 2013). The goal of the debriefing process is to assist participants to reflect on their learning experience in order to examine the meaning and implications of actions during the simulation (Decker et al., 2013). Debriefing is an important component of health care simulations, because learning is dependent on a participant’s ability to reflect on their learning experiences (Decker et al., 2013). Jefferies (2012) suggest that debriefing assists participants to connect theory to both clinical practice and research. According to Decker et al. (2013), “debriefing promotes understanding, supports the …show more content…
• What, if anything, can faculty add to the simulation to better assist participants achieve the learning objectives?
I developed the first question, because I want to provide nurses the opportunity to reflect on their learning experience, examine the meaning, and implications of their actions during the simulation (Decker et al., 2013). According to Fanning and Gaba, reflection on an activities and the subsequent analysis during the debriefing process is the foundation of experiential learning experiences. The second question was developed to obtain feedback pertaining to potential areas for improvement during the simulation in hopes of facilitating participant’s achievement of the expected outcomes.
