For as long as I can remember, I have dreamed of becoming a neonatal nurse. Working in the healthcare field would be extremely rewarding because there are endless opportunities to give back to others. When researching neonatal nursing, I discovered the educational requirements, universities offering the degree, the average salary, as well as job openings close to where I currently live. The career outlook and a typical day on the job summary encouraged me even more to become a neonatal nurse. In order to become a neonatal nurse, a person must be a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. There are typically a few certifications that need to be filled as well. The person must be certified in Neonatal Resuscitation and Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing.
There are many schools that offer the degree required for this career. Some of the colleges in Georgia that offer the degree include Armstrong State University, Kennesaw State University, and Valdosta State University. At each of the schools, they offer the BSN as well as other nursing degrees in case someone wants to go back to school to advance in the field. There are typically three different levels of nurseries in a hospital that neonatal nurses are required to work in. Since there are multiple levels of nurseries, it can be said that these nurses have many responsibilities. In general, a neonatal nurse should know how to operate special equipment, administer proper dosages of medications, chart patient information, run tests, and provide treatment. Neonatal nurses have to be special people that are kind and compassionate because they are caring for newborn babies that can have many different problems. A neonatal nurse must also be prepared to comfort the family of the baby as they care for their precious newborn
