Berk (2014) stated in Erickson Theory of development; generativity versus stagnation deals with middle adulthood stage seven. Erickson believes that when a person reaches middle adulthood, they begin to think about how they can leave a legacy for the next generation. This type of a person is more concern what can I give, versus what can I receive. On the other hand, a person who is considered in stagnation, is only looking for what they can receive, versus what can I give. This type of person could care less what type of legacy he or she is leaving once he is no longer here.

I have taken on the responsibility of caring for my elderly parents. Once a person parents becomes a certain age and is no longer able to care for themselves, the role of parents versus children reverse; now the elderly parent becomes the child and the child become the parent. Physically, this new role reversal can become very exhausting and time consume. The responsibility of seeing a parent who use to be so vibrant, now is waiting on you, the child to come and care for them; seeing this will definitely affect the caregiver psychological and social outlook when looking at their now helpless parents.
