While Equality 7-2521 knows his invention will benefit mankind, he did not intend for it's purpose to be that. His primary motivation is the need to prove that he is the greatest of the people, who contributed even as a measly street sweeper. Equality should be motivated this way, because in a world where everyone is limited in their thinking to benefit man collectively, Equality has no such burden. His determination illustrated that immense sacrifice is necessary to stand up for individual beliefs and to attain happiness. When he left his community, Equality gave up his friendly relations. Left behind were those that he worked with such as International, one of Equality’s best friends, and Union, who was familiar to Equality even though not as well liked by Equality. He also would have surrendered his relationship with the Golden One, if she hadn’t followed him into the Uncharted Forest in the first place.…

In the book Anthem Equality’s primary motivation for conducting his experiments was to show that he was capable and intelligent enough to be a scholar. Equality is very intelligent and he knows he can help out his brothers and their world in many ways by the things he learned in the tunnel. I also think he is very biased and tired of the world he lives in when he was growing up and the world he lives in today. He is right to be motivated this way because it is normal for human beings to want to prove themselves and show that they are capable to do something that they believe they are worthy for.…

What about living in a world where there’s no stress about going to college, choosing your career, or listening to people drone on and on about their love life? When Equality brought the light before the council, they not only did not want to accept it, they were afraid of it. When Equality brought the light to the council, they decreed "Many men in the Homes of the Scholars have had strange new ideas in the past, but when the majority of their brother Scholars voted against them, they abandoned their ideas, as all men must" (pg 73). The council knew neglecting the light was wrong, they knew it would better the society, but they looked beyond that, and denied Equality a chance to give the light. In both novels, the higher council does not do things for the betterment of others. This creates the idea of dishonesty and lack of trust, which ultimately leads to the corruptness in each community.…
