After and absent of almost two years, this is my first quarter in Berkeley, and is Online. When selecting classes I kind of look which one I would like to have, and this class was one of my first option -second to my statistics class because that one I could not change at all! English writing is not one of my best skills, so I do need to put a lot of attention when I’m writing something to someone. This class had helped me a lot, so much, that even when I know I still make a lot of mistakes, I’m sure they are less than I used to do when I first started this course.
Along the quarter, each chapter have been a new experience, chapter 10 have a great impact on the way I write. I confess I been addicted to commas since ever, in both my native language and now in my second language English. Although this is not the first class I have in which the main objective is to better our writing skills good writing takes practices. My current line of work is physically

Is not just what you write, but how and to whom you write that would make your paper, letter, or report stand up or fail. I understand the importance of keeping the information about the facts that are certain to a situation, and obmitting my opinions if this one is not need it or ask. I understand that well written letter with the facts if it is not sent to the right person means nothing to the purpose. Knowing to whom I’m writing would help me treat that person with the level of respect need it, and would help to have the message send across to the right recipient, and this is a reality in any type of career.

Response to “The Transaction” by William Zinsser “The Transaction.” Upon reading its title, I would not have expected William Zinsser’s work to concern writing; monetary or some similar business exchange is what I had anticipated. However, the nature of an exchange is present, though, in the form of information: the exchanging of different ideas (“…he was interested in my answers…I was interested in his answers).” With this, textual evidence supports that Zinsser uses the context of a transaction in order to easily apply a comparison and contrast technique. Moreover, the technique itself provides a prime illustration of how variable writing can be, thus, proving to reflect one’s variable emotions.…

Since starting this class I have noticed how much I write. I journal at least once a week, I’ve had assignments of all kinds that I’ve had papers for, and I spend a great deal of my time on my phone answering messages. In article “So you’ve got a Writing Assignment” Corrine Hinton said “When getting a writing assignment, you should read it more than once just to get knowledge of what they are really asking for”. Hinton claims that it is really important that people carefully read their assignment again and again to understand it properly because when people don’t know the purpose of writing assignment exactly then it is really hard to write well. Again I argue that reading is the back bone of writing. I was not a good reader so I was doing mistake that i did not read my writing assignment properly and at the end I failed and it irritates me because I worked hard…

Before this course, I did not know grammar well, and what I did know I did not fully understand. Yet, due to taking the course, I learned more about the structure of the English language, and can use grammar better than I did before. For instance, the first three major assignments were filled with missing comas, verb-tense misuses, and run-on sentences. Now, I may still make mistakes, but I know why I have made them. In other English courses, I had grammar homework and reading assignments that, often, seemed to be busy work, but with this course, I did not think that was the case.…

I think that paraphrasing will be the hardest for me to avoid while writing. It seems that sometimes it is hard to write or summarize something that is so well written already. The way I will work around that is to stop and re-read what I am wanting to summarize, take a few important words out of the material I am reviewing and jot those down, then go back and write what is needed to complete my sentence or idea. Once I have completed my writing, I will review and make sure I have properly cited my work. Using the guidelines discussed in our “Read Section”, and following the instructions listed on how to source correctly should avoid paraphrasing mistakes and plagiarism.…

It feels like so long ago when I first began this English course. I can remember being so excited about the class topic, racism and social justice, which I felt that I had a lot of passion for. Little did I know that I would have to gather up even more enthusiasm and passion to be able to continue writing papers about the same topic all semester long. This course has tested my endurance, and at many times my patience, and for that I am thankful because I know in the end, it has made me a better writer. Despite various minor challenges this semester I believe that I have put in the hard work that it takes and I have achieved the course goals and will complete this class feeling fulfilled and accomplished.…

One of Brandt’s main ideas “Reading Serves Writing,” brought up an interesting point about the connections between reading and writing. The concept that “reading serves writing,” is a relatable subject and impacts many college students. Whether you are writing an essay or reading endless chapters for a class, reading and writing hold a major role in education. The idea that the two are completely separate entities, is an interesting concept. To me, when I think about writing I think about the yin yang symbol.…

I felt this way because I kept on thinking who is this person I will have as my mentor who will I have to interview. I was stepping out of my comfort zone by talking to someone I never met or knew. My beliefs on reading and writing in the field before I did the interview was that I knew that reading was involved with the interview and writing also but I did not know how much was throughout the career field. At first I was going to interview Jody and Colleen from Cakes a Bloomin who was going to be my mentor and I did not get any responses from Jody or Colleen about the questions I emailed them.…

When people think of English class, most of the time they think of using proper grammar, writing long essays, and reading a really old book that somehow still applies to society today; however, over the course of this second semester I have discovered that there is more to an English class. This semester, we have written over 50 pages, prepared for a test that determines are educational future, and have read many books including the renowned Hamlet. These activities have changed the way I think and taught me important life lessons. This year in English 11, it was required that we wrote at least 5 pages about anything every week. This taught me something I didn’t really know about myself.…
