English Class Reflection Essay

Throughout this semester, I have genuinely learned a lot. AP College English is definitely a difficult course for me, but I have strived to make efforts in changing that. It’s difficult to pinpoint all the things that I have learned during the course. I have learned many things about novels, authors, grammar, writing, reading, and the list goes on. Every year in English I have learned something new and this year is absolutely no different. To answer the question of if I am a better writer than I was before, I would probably say yes. By looking at my portfolio there is a slight increase in my writing grades. I began with the AP score of an 8, with my first impromptu, and then it fell to a 6/7 with my next. The Heart of Darkness impromptu I received the AP score of a 7, so there was a slight improvement from the last. Even though my scores don’t seem to be exactly going up by great amounts, that doesn’t portray if I am a better writer than I was before. Throughout the class I have learned a lot about the importance of commas and MLA formatting. They have always been important, but in this course …show more content…
In past English classes I have never been forced to deeply read, but that is different for this class. If I don’t read closely it’s as if I haven’t even read. I now have been trained to look for literary devices and deeper meanings in the things that we read in class. For example in Beloved I really looked for the deeper meaning in the novel. Toni Morrison is a great author to help a reader to read deeply, because everything has a deeper meaning and I found that out by reading closely. I can also tell that my reading ability has improved from the beginning of the year from the reading quizzes. In the beginning of the year, even though I read, I did very poorly on the reading quizzes. Now my scores are very high scores because I am paying great attention and taking notes on the

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

Throughout the semester of English Composition I, I learned any new things. Over the past few months I have learned many new tips on how to create a good paper. Although I gained much knowledge over the past few months I did struggle with a few things such as formulating a written thesis statement expressing my main point in the composition, producing rough drafts preliminary to the final draft, applying transition strategies to organize the entire composition cohesively and coherently, and overall practicing various prewriting strategies, such as thinking, brainstorming, listing, and freewriting.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

When I began studying at the University of Montevallo, I had a background of high school creative writing and English classes, and one summer of a college English class. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university. However, as I walk away from my English 102 class I carry the understanding of writing a college level essay, undertaking research and completing a research and argument paper properly, and knowledge to prepare me for my other classes and profession.…

When most people think of a history class they imagine sitting in a dark lecture hall taking notes off a PowerPoint presentation, memorizing a few dates and people, repeating it on the test. Truly studying history, I learned, is more than memorization of a previously told story and accepting it as true. In this class I have learned history is about actively engaging the material, picking apart the details and nuances, creating and using timelines, finding deeper meaning in the material, asking questions, then looking again and digging deeper. It is not a passive study and not about memorization as I believed at the beginning of the semester. History is about asking questions and looking for answers, not just accepting what is already there, but…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…

A reflective essay to me is a form of writing that scrutinizes and perceives the progress of the writer 's personal experience. Also, reflective essays describe and explore the development of the writer, and deliberate future goals. I am delighted to reflect on my experience this semester in Management 3120 with Professor McKechnie. Throughout the semester, I have learned enormous concepts through reading and class discussions, which I will be able to use in my profession. This class was a remarkable class, and it taught me how to be a better manager as well as a better human being.…

When I was in Junior High School, I was in Honors English; however, I always felt quite indifferent towards Language Arts. I was twenty-six years old by the time, I returned to school and desperately trying to rush through the study material, as I was required to pass seven tests just to be accepted into an accredited college course. After passing all four tests, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematical Reasoning, I received my Certificate of High School Equivalency in 2015. Then, I was accepted into Austin Community College’s Transitions Program, which is an intense and fast-paced program that is supposed to help prepare future students to pass the TSI exam by reviewing reading, writing, and math skills. At that point, it was common to hear me say, “I hate English!”…
