Stereotypes have always been an issue in any part of the world. Stereotyping is a phenomenon or representation of an individual or group of people based on inaccurate information. Naturally these stereotypes are brought upon by ones’ skin color or ethnicity. Discrimination often originates from prejudice and stereotyping. A minority that time and time again gets stereotyped and discriminated against are African Americans. Depicting African Americans as dangerous has been engraved so deeply into society via a wide variety of media such as the newspapers, video games, movies, and television. Widespread media often portrays African American youth as thugs, predators, or criminals. As a result of this, it creates tension filled communities and law enforcement 's that miraculously are able to get away with violence towards them. Though African Americans are not the only ones discriminated against. Another minority that has various stereotypes depicted about them on the media are Hispanics. They are usually presented as drug addicts, gang bangers, maids, illegal, or speaking heavily accented English. If left unchecked, prejudice and misrepresentation can lead to violence toward a specific race group and can result in the loss of lives worldwide. Latinos suffer from stereotypical comments as well. They are always portrayed as immigrants with no papers or even for the most ridiculous reasons. In the article, “School Official Says White Students Should Get Air Conditioning Instead Of Latinos Because They’re Used To The Heat”, by Adolfo Flores, the school official Denise Elksen says, “I don’t really care how this comes out, I would say 95% of the students at Las Juntas do not have air conditioning in their homes, So whether that means that those students are more acclimated and can handle a little bit more heat that the John Stewart students, which I would say 95% of their residents have air conditioning in their homes.” (Flores). She is basically stereotyping Latinos because she believes that they don’t have the money to buy an air conditioner therefore they are more adapt to the heat than their white counterparts. She believes that the mostly white school should get the air conditioner since most white families have one and aren’t used to the heat. Those are some outrages claims from here to be flaunting a stereotype like this so lightly. A television show that stereotypes Latinos is a show named Family Guy. The show stars the Griffin family that very occasionally hires a maid for the house. The maids name is Consuela and she happens to be the only Mexican that comes out. She is an exaggerated stereotype because she is a maid that speaks a heavily accented English that no one can understand and whenever she’s around things happen to go missing around the house. Video games are nothing but a quick pass time for people to enjoy and let of some steam but depending on the ethnicity of the character it can change how you view their race as a whole. When games give you the option to choose if your characters ethnicity is black or white some people associate African Americans as being more violent then whites. In the article “Study: Video Games May Reinforce Racist Stereotypes”, by Alan Neuhauser, participants were asked to choose the race their avatar would be and then after match either everyday items or weapons to them. “Volunteers who played as a black character more readily associated the black faces with the weapons that those who played as a white character, the researched team found.” (Neuhauser) The media does a very good job at labelling blacks as being violent just so that video games can come and only reinforce that stereotype. “But if white people are fed a media diet that shows blacks as violent, they don’t have a realistic view of black people. It isn’t good to put yourself in the shoes of a murderer, as you do in many more video games.” (Neuhauser) They are constantly being spoon-fed that African Americans are a certain way and eventually after hearing a lie countless times people actually start to believe it.
