In this role, we need to protect patients human and legal rights and provides assistance in asserting those rights if need arises. Advocacy may include, for example, providing additional information for a patient who is trying to decide whether or not to accept a treatment. This involve inform and support. I provide them with the information needed to make an informed decision. There are several steps involved in being an effective patient advocate:
1. Present the information in a way that is meaningful to the patients
2. Make sure the patient agrees to receive the information.
3. Support: Patient advocacy involves referring them to support groups and interest group,
4. Education: Both the patients and the survivors of disease and their carers often are in need of education beyond treatment and physical rehabilitation.
5. Clinical liaison: GP’s act as liaison between a patient and her other health care provider.
6. Respect and promote patient rights, matters of privacy, confidentiality or informed consent,

For those who have speaking or linguistic disability, I used to involve writing down or use of other family members, but this may not always be appropriate. For example, a family member may be reluctant to tell the patient complex information about their illness. In such cases, professional experts are used for discussing the risks and benefits of treatment or giving information about the prognosis of a serious illness.
If talking to a person with hearing problems, it may be useful to use quieter office or private area to avoid the background noise. Additionally, writing on paper is also helpful.
People with visual disability sometimes requires professional experts to explain the medical situation and treatment.
