Yue is from a very large metropolitan area in Southeast China with nearly eight million people. I on the other hand, come from a very small rural community in Northeast Iowa with a population of only 4,000 people. The ocean is very close to where Yue lives, therefore her weather is a lot warmer, and they rarely have snow. In Northeast Iowa, there are only rivers, and snow falls by the foot in December.

In Northeast Iowa, it is looked down upon if you are not religious. There are nearly ten churches in my small town alone. Unlike the holidays in the United States being primarily religion based, Southeast China celebrates their own holidays similarly to the way we celebrate. The most well celebrated holiday that Yue’s family practices is Spring Festival. Spring Festival is China’s version of the United State’s New Years. During Spring Festival, Yue does not have school. Her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins all get together and share a meal prepared by her grandmother, usually dumplings. Yue said that this is a special time for her because holidays, like Spring Festival, are the only times she sees her extended family. During holidays, the gift of money is typically given from the elders. Even though the holidays I partake in are religion based, the way Yue and I celebrate are remotely similar. My extended family gets together and have a meal that is primarily prepared by my grandmother. During Christmas, money is a typical gift that is given. Since my extended family is so large, it is usually just my grandparents that give money to everyone. Even though Yue and I do not celebrate the same holidays, we celebrate our own holidays in similar
