I invited three notable authors of research on the effects of violent videogames on children’s development to a conversation over coffee at Square One cafe. Unfortunately, one of these authors, Dr. Deyreh, was unable to join us physically due to the recent immigration ban on Iran. So, he’ll be joining us via skype. The other two authors, Dr. Ferguson and Dr. Agina made it although the latter was late. While waiting for Dr. Agina, I started the conversation with Dr. Ferguson.
Me: Why are violent video games always seen as a negative influence on children’s development?
Ferguson: The reason for this widespread concept is that many researches reach a unanimous conclusion that violent video games are bad for children. This similarity of conclusions stems from a flaw in the methodology used while conducting research. An example of a flaw in methodology is the use of bivariate analysis that gives subjective. This means that researchers measure the relationship between two variables—one of the variables is violence in video games—instead of analyzing the relationship between multiple variables that are related to violence in video games. Moreover, biases, including publication and citation bias have contributed to the proliferation of arbitrary metrics that measure aggression in subjects.
