Douglas Whitman Research Paper

“There was no telling Doug that he could not do something” was how his mother described him. His mother recalled a time when Doug was three years old. His brothers were trying to get him up on the roof of a barn. She stopped them and said “Doug cannot go up there until he is able to climb up on his own.” As she turned around to walk back inside, the older boys yelled to her, saying “He’s up!” From that moment on she knew there wasn’t much that could stop this young boy of hers.
Douglas Whitman has been happily married for 8 years. He is a fun, athletic father of three young boys. His tall height and slender stature has allowed him to be a strong competitor in sports throughout his life. He grew up in a large family of sixteen. For most of his life, his family lived on wealth fare, but both of his parents worked very hard to care for their family. His father had a PhD and his mother was incredibly artistic. In reflecting upon his parents, Doug said “they both have this gift where they can take what’s handed to them and make something awesome out of it.” Doug is a very successful Principal Scientist, and currently an interim director for the research and development department of a medical testing manufacturing company. Doug said that he earned this position because “I have something different about me then other scientists, which is creativity...Even competing against all the PhD’s, I’m able to come up with more ideas then them.” Doug’s creativity and deep thinking kept his childhood dream of becoming a scientist alive. Ever since the fourth grade he could remember wanting to be a scientist; He would dress up as a mad scientist for Halloween, and felt respect for other scientist. Through the encouragement of his father, he even corresponded back and forth with Henry B. Eyring, claiming he had the solution for being able to travel faster than the speed of light. However, Doug was not naturally talented at science and school. Doug remembered not getting very good grades in elementary, middle and high school. Even college was difficult for him. Despite this, Doug still went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in neurosciences from BYU, and then went on to receive his Master of Science degree from the University of Texas in Science Technology Commercialization. Through his accomplishments he has proven that no one should limit their capabilities. We’ve learned from great scientists, such Albert Einstein, that “Imagination is more important than knowledge”.

Most people are familiar with some of his work, such as the theory of relativity or one of the most known equations (E=MC2). Einstein did not do particularly well in school and teachers did not like him very much, but he did not let this limit him. He was able to magnify his strengths and because of this became one of the most brilliant physicists the world has ever known. Reading through the facts of Albert Einstein, I can draw several parallels to Doug. Part of his job as a principal scientist involves reading through patents, just as Einstein did at one time. As Doug’s mother put it, “he has one of the most active imaginations.” It is because Doug has been able to embrace his imagination that he has had great success. I have personally known Doug for

The climax in the story is literally the best part of the story because it displays forgivness and how Doug is moving forward rather than being stuck in the past. The truth of the matter is that yes Doug was a pretty overly sensitive guy but his sensitivity caused him to realize and also make emence not only with his old self but with Ralph, but there had to be a starting point of it all. There was a huge moment in the story when in the readers mind they were questioning what exactly Doug was going to do and it was the moment when Ralph opened his door and it was almost as if an unexpected shock came over Doug and he thinks to himself “I saw Ralph Underhill. I saw him clearly”(Bradbury,5) The moment he says these words you notice that something…

While Doug would not find happiness on heaven, he did find happiness on earth following his mother’s liberation from her marriage. Mark’s treatment of Trish as a child, his unwanted sexual advances on her, his repeated sexual assaults on her when she refused his advances, and changing her name without her consent were examples of his cruelty. The hatred that Trish felt towards Mark was reflected in the rebellious energy of Doug. Likewise, Doug’s dislike of his father, and refusing to be belittled by his father, stemmed from Mark’s treatment of Trish. Despite his father’s wishes, Doug signed a record contract and pursued a career in music.…

There is the argument that maybe Doug just misremembered. For the purposes of this essay, however, let’s assume that the arm/leg discrepancy was included with a deeper intent. Doug saw things occurring differently, which goes against determinism in this story. In including Judy’s choice to go “off script,” it is shown that free will has some part to play, maybe miniscule, but it can affect the turn of events. Compatibilism seems relevant to the situation, but in varying degrees.…
