The Dominican Republic The Dominican Republic is located on half of a small island known as Hispaniola. The island of Hispaniola is located in the Caribbean sea and is also the second largest island located in the Caribbean. Over the long history of the island, it has been split into two halves, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The Dominican Republic is the largest hal fog the island with a land area of 18,704 cubic miles and a population of 10.4 million. The Dominican Republic was originally discovered by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage to the “new world” and settled it for the Spanish. The Taino were the first inhabitants of the island, before the Europeans arrived. After Christopher Columbus discovered the island in 1492, the Spaniards conquered the land and it became a starting point for to conquest to mexico and other parts of Latin America (The World Fact Book) The …show more content…
It has four different mountain ranges that run through the small island, the Cordillera Central being the highest and largest of the mountain ranges. It include the highest point in the Dominican, Pico Duarte. Smaller mountain ranges span the norther coast line, and the south western coast line that the Dominican Republic shares with Haiti. There are several peaks along the mountain ranges that reach over 5,00 feet above sea level. Lake Enriquillo is the largest lake in the Dominican at forty feet below sea level, it is also the lowest point on the island. Yaque del Norte is the longest river in the country, many smaller rivers and streams branch off of the river (North America). The land in the Dominican republic is very fertile, 51% of the total land there is used for farming. The Dominican Republic have five major natural resources that are available because of where it is located. These resources are, nickel, gold, bauxite, and silver.
