I know I shouldn’t be calling you little Nya because you are literally the same height and size from 6th grade but it sounds good to say. Anyway, today in Caver class we read an essay from Iris Marion Young and Marilyn Frye and had to talk about oppression. Just in case you don’t know what oppression is, it is unfair treatment or control. Iris defines oppression in 5 faces which I will explain to you. Let's start off with 5 faces of oppression violence, exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, and cultural imperialism. Violence is the easy one to explain because it is the most visible. Oppression of violence is when a group of people must fear random attacks on them. In other words, it’s a way of keeping people in their place. For example, if a gay couple walks down the street with each other holding hand. They would fear for random attacks on them because of homophobia. Another example is when a woman is walking down a dark street. She would fear unwanted catcalled and sexual assault. The next face is exploitation, this is the act of using people’s labors to produce profit while not compensating them fairly. To make this easy to understand think of it like this, rich and poor. To start off, I will define the terms for you; sexism is prejudice or discrimination based on a person's sex or gender. While racism is discrimination and prejudice towards people based on their race or ethnicity. As you can see here the common thing racism and sexism have in common is the discrimination. While the difference is that racism is attacking a person because of their race or ethnicity. While sexism is attacking someone because of their sex or gender. An example of racism is when a Black person doesn’t get the job they wanted because their name sounded to African/Black. An example of sexism is when a transgender doesn’t get the job because of what he/she goes
