Probation is an extended period of supervision of an offender in the community. Offenders are watched for a period of time while released into the community usually as an alternative to incarceration. Probationers usually avoid serving time in prison. The purpose of probation is to allow offenders a chance at rehabilitation and the possibility of not going to prison. Not only does it help the offenders but it also helps the justice system maintain prison population. Allowing qualified offenders for probation to be released opens up space for more serious offender or even offenders who could use some work toward their own rehabilitation.

This is a strategy of reentering prisoners back into the community. In order to receive parole an offender needs to complete a part of his/her sentence in an institution. Probation and parole differ in many ways. Probation is an alternative to offenders going to jail or prison while with parole the offender has already completed some amount of time incarcerated. The conditions that take place are determined differently. Although parole and probation aim for the same outcome of rehabilitation there are different conditions that are expected from the offender once released. Individual could be required to stay in a half way house to receive more help or defendant convicted of molesting a child would be require to stay away from parks or play ground, the requirements just depend on the crime
