So with this mindset, what is the problem with harming or letting others harm those who don’t really count as a ‘person?’ Due to stigma associated with those with handicaps, the disabled community has a greater chance of receiving abuse than those without disabilities (Powers). There is a high number of physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, and financial abuse in the disabled community (Powers). Some abuse is actually unique to those with disabilities such as denying support, manipulating medications, and tampering with equipment (Powers). With society already having an ‘I don’t want to get involved’ attitude towards abuse, it should not be such a surprise to not have heard of the amount of the sheer amount of mistreatment towards the disabled community. To see the number of those who are disabled who are abused, one only needs to read various surveys that show the information. For example, in a survey from Canada, forty percent of two hundred forty five disabled women reported abuse (Powers). Other surveys show shockingly similar numbers in reports documenting the number of people with disabilities who were abused. Another report documented that out of two hundred women, sixty seven percent reported physical abuse and fifty three percent reported sexual abuse (Powers). It us up to the rest of use; however, to identify the remaining abuse that happens behind closed doors and take
