Discrimination Against Homosexuality Essay

Register to read the introduction… Marcus Bachmann, a therapist who runs a Christian counseling place, claimed that homosexuality could be cured. Bachmann stated that homosexuality is both a choice and a threat (Goldberg, 2011). A method called the conversion therapy is a way of curing homosexuality. A conversion therapy aimed to re-assign the sexual orientation of its patient. During 1950s and 1960s, a conversion therapy is done by pressuring its patient to masturbate to a picture of those of the opposite sex whilst they will be electrically shocked when they are shown a picture of those with the same sex. Nowadays, conversion therapy try to limits the urge of homosexuality rather than completely eliminating them. Opposing the claim that homosexuality can be cured, the APA (American Psychiatrist Association) has removed homosexuality from mental illness and disorders (Herek, n.d). Since homosexuality is neither a mental illness nor disorder, it is not possible to be cured. Homosexuality is not a choice, a disease, a lifestyle, a trend, and it cannot be changed. Homosexuality cannot be cured just like heterosexual cannot be cured. Forcing a homosexual to change their sexual orientation can cause severe depression. An example of this case is Bobby Griffith. Griffith was a young gay man, who committed a suicide on 27 August 1983. Griffith was struggling with his sexuality because he was born in a Christian household where being gay is considered a sin. His mother, Mary Griffith, …show more content…
This form of beliefs has been etched to their children’s mind as well. Bullying a homosexual has been a trend in school. People tend to discriminate the minority. If heterosexual is the minority, chances are the homosexual will bully the heterosexual (HaierUp, 2013). There are people who believe that discriminating a homosexual will make realize that being a homosexual is wrong and not normal. Opposing this opinion, bullying, whatever the reason behind it is, is still wrong and may end up fatal. One of the most famous cases is the case of Tyler Clementi, who commits suicide after being filmed by two students engaging a sexual activity with a person of the same gender. Between July and September 2010, a series of youth suicide occurred, all believed to be a victim of homosexual bullying (Mellin & Hinojosa, 2011). Bullying might not be considered a serious case, but it creates discrimination amongst student. The teenager tends to be more emotionally fragile and continues bullying might lead to depression and in extreme cases, suicide. When the victim of bullying commits a suicide, the bully is indirectly killing the victim, which is against the bible, which they use as a base to discriminate homosexuality. Discrimination against homosexuality is can be compared to the discrimination against African American or gender discrimination in the past. Human being should

Sometimes, the teachers are the one’s doing the bullying. This is infuriating because I know several people that are gay and most of them are not in your face about it, they are not trying to rub the fact that they are gay in my face. They are just normal people and that is not how the world sees them. Life is really difficult for these children and it is just sad that they have to go through things such as bullying. The world today is not great by any means.…

The American Psychological Association Taskforce on Appropriate Therapeutic Responses to Sexual Orientation reviewed literature on conversion therapy in 2009. They concluded that there has been no methodologically sound research on adults who have participated in conversion therapy that has proven it is effective in changing sexual orientation or gender identity (Jadwin-Cakmak, 2015). Because having a sexual orientation of lesbian, gay, or bisexual is not a mental health disorder, efforts to change one’s sexual orientation are inappropriate. Though Gender Dysphoria, which is the incongruence between one’s physical body and one’s gender identity, is stated in version five of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as a mental disorder, there is still no research that shows conversion therapy is effective in changing gender identity (Jadwin-Cakmak, 2015). The leading medical and mental health associations in the U.S. have all rejected conversion therapy not only due to its lack of evidence of it’s effectiveness, but also because of it’s potential risks.…

Over all, bullying is increasing and so is the amount of suicide among teens. Kathy Shaidle’s article “In Defense of Bullying” states that bullying is good on the development of youth to strive for more. That not many adolescence kill themselves due to bullying and anti-bullying actually is just creating more bullies. This outlook on bullying is ignoring that there has been a massive increase in self-harm amongst teenagers, why teens have been resorting to self-harm, how bullying actually affects lives, and how suicide and depression have become more widespread among adolescence. The article by Kathy supports no evidence that there aren’t that many suicides because of bullying and that bullying does not pose a massive problem for the well-being of youth.…

Often times, as Americans, it is easy to take for granted some of the things that are offered in the United States. Most Americans do realize that foreigners and immigrants often come to the United States due to this belief that opportunities here are multitudinous and diverse and I don’t disagree with the belief. However, I believe that as Americans, it is assumed that by the opportunities that these foreigners speak of are strictly job-related, when that’s not true. It goes beyond jobs all the way to simpler means of living, faster access to emergency services, quality educations, and much more. As I interviewed a fellow teammate here on the Ball State Men’s Volleyball team, I learned not only about his cultural perspective and what that…

Bullying would take place when really they were the ones that would have sexual attraction towards the same sex. I even had those that were homophobic and even though I had no real evidence of them acting with the same sex sexually, it was still not understood from where their dislike stemmed. Growing up in a small town as I did, homophobia was not uncommon. A lot of the homophobic standards stemmed from religious reasoning or just the “southern laws” of what was right and expected of each “southern child.” Nonetheless, even from those small towns you find that one child who didn’t care to think about the rules and who didn’t care about your sexual preference.…

America’s goal of becoming a society that is a “city upon a hill” is often unachievable for some. The United States prides itself on its many freedoms and opportunities, but these freedoms are often not available for many people. Over time, many people have spoken out against the unjust treatment of the LGBT community. You May Not Even be Helping the Homosexuals Conversion therapy is a therapy method that pressures homosexuals to extreme levels of stress and depression, which ultimately leads to suicide and/or mental disorder. Despite large, credible organizations and doctors, like the American Psychiatric Association, The National Association of Social Workers, the Human Rights Campaign, and many more condemn the use of conversion therapy. Those who exercise conversion therapy have no data to support their claim that it helps change sexual orientation. Many organizations castigate the act of conversion therapy because of its lack of scientific proof.…

Reparative or Conversion Therapy (also known as Sexual Orientation Change Efforts (SOCE)) refers to counselling and psychotherapy that attempts to eliminate an individual’s sexual desires for members of their own sex. Until 1973, homosexuality was considered a curable mental illness by the American Psychiatric Association(APA). The APA and other reputable organizations now consider conversion therapy to be unnecessary, ineffective, and potentially dangerous. Despite the APA’s, (and several other major medical groups) denouncement of these treatments, there remains health professionals and paraprofessionals who continue to engage in attempts to convert homosexual men and women to heterosexuality. Conversion therapy, is prefaced on the idea that homosexuality is a mental defect.…
