“Check the Powerball number. If we hit the jackpot, we’ll fly to Vietnam immediately.” These words were said as she handed her eldest daughter a lottery ticket and her cellphone. Every time, just before checking to see if she has won the jackpot, she repeats this sentence like a mantra. She misses her home, the place that has made her who she is today. When asked, “What would you do if you won the lottery”, most people would say they would buy a new car, a mansion, or even a yacht. Loan Phan, in this case, wishes to visit the country she left over twenty years ago. She passes on her experiences and life lessons she has learned from that change onto those around her. She was strong and loyal to her friend and her family (despite what had happened to her while she was with her mother). I think one of the things I loved the most about her was how realistic her grief was. Sure, there was hate towards her mother for doing what she did – but it never took over and she still felt grief. She reminded me of a trapped dog, sweet and cuddly to those who showed her kindness but a rabid animal to those with opposite intentions. She does some pretty silly things though, dumb and completely idiotic things, but it didn’t take away from her character as a whole.…

Drunk, stupid, lazy, these are just a few of the words that popular culture has used to describe the Native American Indians. The so called “Spaghetti Westerns” were constantly painting these “savages” as less than human. Even John Wayne, who perhaps had more respect than most for Native Americans, still portrayed them in a negative connotation. One of Wayne’s most popular movies, McClintock, has the American Indians stating a party was fun but “no whiskey, so we go home.”…
