Can you remember a time where something joyful happened? Most of us tend to cherish the joyful moments because it was once a time of happiness where nothing else mattered but that. In this essay, a little girl 's journey filled with joy during the 1930 's in Florida will be shared. She will meet new people that will bring out the best in her, mention her father’s journey about his beloved sport and World War I, and face difficult situations where she learned to face her fears and changes. To begin with, in the book titled Sweet Gum Slough, a little girl shares with us 6 years of her life experience while residing in Florida during the 1930 's. There she will meet new people that will bring the best out of her. She shares memories of her in school with her friends and of her and her father, she mentions a lot about those that she came across while living in Florida. Lizzie was one of her friends that she had met, she considered Lizzie to be her new best friend. She and Lizzie did many things together. They loved to play with each other after school, and go on adventures together.
Karssiens writes "Lizzie was my new friend, and I felt happy there with her in the hot, June sun, watching dozens of pale minnows taste our toes and ankles with their tiny soft lips" (22). The point I’m making is that the little enjoyed the simplest little thing with her friend Lizzie. The little girl was very descriptive when it comes to describing when and how she had met someone. She describes meeting Lizzie by sharing that “her family came to the Sweetgum com-munity in the early spring before school closed. Their strange little truck stopped at our front gate, and one of the children opened the gate so the truck could drive through" (Karssiens 22). Her most vivid memory allows readers to paint a picture with extravagant details. Moreover, the little girl talks highly of her father, she did too for her mother, but she had an unbreakable bond with her father and it shows throughout the book. She shared some of her father 's journey as well. Karssiens writes “when he was twenty years old, my father joined the navy and world war I. He was assigned to a mighty battleship and letters from him to his parents were frothy with youth and excitement" (75). Readers are able to take away a lot of information about the little girl’s journey, because she talks about her family and share information about them that she would like us to know. She tells us about her brother and how they both loved to fish, she mentions her mother whom loved to help others in any way that she could have. Her sister whom did not really do much. And her father who would tell her stories and encourage her to be strong. She mentions her father 's athletic side and shares with us that her father was unable to proceed with his dream sport, due to his mother 's request. Her father was a person that loved sport and his favorite was boxing and he wanted to be a boxer but that did not go his way. "Throughout his teenage years, my father played a variety of sports, but the one he wanted most was denied him. His mother put her foot down and refused to let him box. (Karssiens 75). You can tell that this little girl really loved her father and there is nothing greater than having a loving father. …show more content…
She also enjoyed spending family time with her brother and sister. She loved going fishing, but mainly with her brother and mother, her dad was not into it and her sis-ter usually wanders off after a while. Karssiens writes “My mother, brother, and I were the fish-ermen. One or two of us, or all three, fished every day (84). This little girl took on anything and did almost everything that seemed fun to her. She learned to be adventurous and open to new beginnings, also she learned to be independent and build curiosity.
